It sounds to be basically a weekend where you meet other successful applicants and first year people studying your subjects.
Really shouldnt be 100 pounds return even from Edinburgh? Get yourself a railcard and book well in advance. I can get a return for about 40 living in Newcastle .

Yeah, to be fair I booked like 2 days before without a railcard when I went down before.
No it's just Jesus that does it and yes you should go. Well, you should if you do a subject with a reasonable number of people. It is a lot like freshers week, but it's also a LOT of fun, the 1st years pay for you to go to formal and things, and put you up for the nights you're there, and you'll get to meet all of the people doing your subject, which makes the whole business of turning up for freshers week far less scary, and also means you get to know people you can panick about mundane things like whether you should bring your own duvet with That said, if you do something like Music or PhilThe or Psychology where there are only 2 students per year it's far less worth it although you do still meet all the other Babies who are there on the same weekend.

But how on earth will it cost you 100 quid?
It's ALWAYS worth spending money to meet fellow Musos...

My friend's a current Jesus fresher and went to the Babies Weekend last year and enjoyed it. By the sounds of it, everyone just got drunk and got with each other, although I'm not sure how entirely accurate an assessment that is. If you can get a reasonably priced fare in advance it sounds like a good idea, but I wouldn't stress about it if you can't.
I know people have said this already, but I'm looking to book train tickets from London to Edinburgh for a trip at Easter and if you book at the right time (I think around 8 weeks beforehand a load of 'advance' tickets are made available) you can get one way for £15, then the train from London to Oxford is about £5 (booked the same length of time beforehand). Get a railcard and it'll make it much cheaper again! Plus if you're travelling up and down often come term-time a railcard will be useful - you'll quickly make up the cost of it in what you save, I know I have!
As far as I know Balliol don't do anything similar ( ) but Jesus' "Babies Weekend" sounds pretty fun to me - I'd go for it, it'll make your first week in October a bit less overwhelming if you know a few people already.

At risk of sounding like your thrifty-but-annoying great aunt, if you'd bought a railcard you would have recouped the cost and more just on that one journey (a £24 railcard would have got you a £33 saving).
Also if money is really a problem, try different permutations of Megatrain and Megabus (consider changing in either Birmingham or London). That's if you've got the time.
I'm afraid I can't actually help with the substance of your question though.
