Vet degree admission, animal science degree?
    Hey,
I've recently applied to study veterinary medicine with preliminary year at nottingham vet school and have been given an interview. As my back up plan i applied to bio-veterinary science at Lincoln and a few others, that i've been accepted at. However, i've just now stumbled across animal science at nottingham (at the same campus as the veterinary) and it makes more sense to do the degree there so i can go straight into the veterinary degree after the animal science course. Is it too late to apply for the animal science degree? Would be really grateful for some help on this!

Not sure if it is too late for you to apply for the animal sci course at Notts. But, that won't mean that you automatically get onto the vet course there. You will still have to do the three year degree, apply via ucas at the end, be interviewed etc. It doesn't mean that you will already have a place, or that you are guarenteed one. So, it won't be any different having done animal sci at Notts, BioVet, or any of the other animal courses around. Only difference is which course and campus appeals to you really.

If you get onto the vet course why not just do that? I dont know much about it but if you're accepted on the vet course why do the stepping stone to get to it later? You could do the vet course and then do the animal science course later.

The animal science course is no guarentee that you'll get onto the vet course, in fact it's more competitve and in the last couple of years only 1 person per year doing animal science at nottingham has go on to get onto the vet course here. A few have gone to other unis (but then unless it's RVC you're looking at very expensive tuition fees).

Don't turn down the pre-lim interview! You do a pre-liminary year in the vet school on the camous then go straight into first year (only 1 person from the pre-lim year failed to get a place on the 5 year course after completing the year)

i applied to do bioveterinary science at Lincoln and the degree with integrated prelim year at Notts. Think i'll just see what happens with the vet course at Nott! Even tho i'm not too good when it comes to interviews! lol would give my right leg to get in tho! x x

Hey, thanks for the advice! will be so happy if i get through the interview i definitely haven't turned it down. Just wondering though if in the worst case scenario i'm not accepted at nott for the vet course, would they let me study animal science there even though i havent applied?

Re: Vet degree admission, animal science degree?
I did Animal Science at Notts, and got onto it via clearing, but that was before the vet department was there, so they may have more applicants now - I don't know.

Also, from what people have said on here, is seems that quite often, if you are unsucessful for vet sci at notts, they pass your information onto the biosci department and they may make you an offer.

Tbh, I would see how it goes with your interview and then take it from there. You might not need to worry anyway - you could get in If not, then see if they offer you animal science. But...bear in mind graduate entry isn't going to be any easier. You need to look at why you didn't get in first time round. Graduate entry is more expensive, even if you go to one of the unis which just charges standard fees you still have another 5 year degree to afford. It is a long, expensive, way round. So don't jump into it without thinking it all through first

Just to reiterate what others have said, good luck with that. Chances are even more slim. Grad entry is not a back door, there are even less places.

Very often if you are unfortunate and get a rejection, the vet school will pass your application on to the bioscience department who will make you an offer so you can choose animal science that way

I'm the same. The amount of drunken emails I've sent to people, mostly declaring my undying love, just makes me want to curl up and die. For this same reason I tend to leave my phone at home too :o:
