Re: Best Halls of Residence? (The Big Accommodation Choices Thread Mark II)It's more stuck in the middle than anything else - as tillytots says, the transport links are less good.(Original post by quarton1)
Would you be right to say that victoria parks a good option because its close to fallowfield but not too far from the city and uni?
Also what contract length is a better option 40 or 51?
51 week contracts are normally for postgrads. If you get a 40 week contract, then you can always extend and stay in halls all summer, although you'll usually have to move rooms. -
Re: Best Halls of Residence? (The Big Accommodation Choices Thread Mark II)TBH, there's not a massive amount of difference between the two, although personally I'd probably opt for Sheavyn, because(Original post by 3ka_xo)
yeah that's what i was thinking of doing (with/without basin for first two choices) but i didn't know if that was narrowing down my options too much or something
i have been looking at both sheavyn house and richmond park for my other preferences! could you possibly inform me on anything you know about these two?
thanks for the help!
- it has access to all of Ashburne's facilities
- it's closer to the bus stop (lazy, I know)
- It's based around a nice grassy quad (shared with Ashburne), which is great in the summer. -
I think it just means a larger room.(Original post by keshavpadia)
The Wright Robinson has an option for super single room. What does this confusing term mean as if en suite, shared, basin, larger room, etc..... What?????

Accomodation info
Hi guys,
I am completing my finals. I was wondering if I could apply for accomodation before being completely sure about my grades. Further I am looking for a few advices, given the fact that I don't know the halls, the city and I have no idea about which hall I should choose.
- I would like to be as close as possible to the campus.
- I want to have fun.
- I wish the female/male ratio is decent.
- Twin room with ensuite bathroom.
Is this a dream or it is possible? I don't know if I am comfortable with a shared bathroom...how does it work? Isn't it a little bit awkard at first?
Do you guys have a previous experience with twin room? Can we make a preference about which major is taking our roommate?
Thanks -
Re: Best Halls of Residence? (The Big Accommodation Choices Thread Mark II)
I was wondering do people often get their first choice? I've put Oak house (basin) as my first choice and oak house (no basin) as my second choice, as you can probably tell I want to go to oak house, so is there a strong possibility I'll get it or do they just shove you anywhere?

Re: Accomodation infoI'm not sure what you mean by twin room. If you mean a shared room (i.e. with one other roommate) then you'll be disappointed as Manchester offers no shared accommodation, all of the rooms are single occupancy.(Original post by edo1493)

Shared bathrooms are usually single sex and are shared between four to 12ish people. Legal requirements mean that there will be at least one toilet per 4/5 people but larger shares usually offer more than this. You will probably have the same amount of showers/baths.

I stayed in at Dalton-Ellis Hall when I came to Uni (the first time..) and I really loved it. Close to Uni (walkable) and you can chose what type of room (ensuite, shared bathroom). If you want to be near Uni, then the Halls in Victoria Park are good. -
Re: Best Halls of Residence? (The Big Accommodation Choices Thread Mark II)
I am looking at Burkhardt House since it is in victoria park and it is cheap. However it says it is a high demand location, why?
Thanks
Ps: is it just self catered?
Ps2: Allen hall has shared rooms.... ??Last edited by edo1493; 28-06-2012 at 20:49. -
Re: Best Halls of Residence? (The Big Accommodation Choices Thread Mark II)Burkhardt Hall isn't cheap to most people. It's £30 more expensive per week than other accommodation. It's in high deman because many students want ensuite, self catered and to be near the university.(Original post by edo1493)

Re: Best Halls of Residence? (The Big Accommodation Choices Thread Mark II)You can (and should) apply for your accommodation now, although the deadline is August 31st. However, Manchester doesn't offer twin rooms, but shared bathrooms are, in my experience, absolutely fine. In self-catered accommodation, they tend to be shared between about four people, whereas catered accommodation will have several loos / showers shared between a corridor of up to ~12 people. All halls (with the obvious exceptions of St Gabriels and St Anselms) have a fairly equal ratio of males to females.(Original post by edo1493)

There is a compromise to be had between the halls with the best social offerings and the location. Fallowfield is the most social campus, but it is the furthest away from campus. However, given the excellent bus service, the distance really isn't an issue at all.
There's a good possibility that you'll get it, although it can't be guaranteed. They try to accommodate the preferences of as many people as possible. I know very few people (as in, I can count them on the fingers of one hand) who didn't get one of their three choices.(Original post by *trav*)

Not as such. They don't even look at the accommodation applications for unconditional applicants until June, and they don't consider applications from people with conditional offers until after results day, so in that sense it's not first-come-first-served. However, if you applied on 31st August (the deadline), after everyone else has received their accommodation offers, then you will be left with what is available.(Original post by 3ka_xo)
do manchester operate on a first come first served basis? -
Re: Best Halls of Residence? (The Big Accommodation Choices Thread Mark II)Yeah. I though that the common price for ensuite rooms was something around 5k. After seeing Dalton's price that are over 6k, Burkhardt seemed a good deal xD.(Original post by ellakrystina)

No university accommodation has shared rooms.
Apart from joking, I am now thinking about an ensuite room (catered). I know I am gonna have problems with that for a while since I eat different things here in italy, but I don't want to have any troubles with coocking alone and every single day. (I could probably est chips and burgers all day long....)
Do you know any other hall with this service, catered and ensuite?
ps: I have hust found out that the only hall that has both services is Dalton, which is too far from my perspectives...is that possible?Last edited by edo1493; 29-06-2012 at 06:30. -
Re: Best Halls of Residence? (The Big Accommodation Choices Thread Mark II)The accommodation search function isn't working for me at the moment. I have a feeling that Woolton Hall in Fallowfield has some ensuite room, as does Ashburne. However these are in high demand and in very low numbers.(Original post by edo1493)

- Ashburne (only a few en suites though)
- Woolton Hall (not a huge number of en suites though)
- Dalton-Ellis
- St Anselms (all male; uni website seems somewhat internally contradictory though about whether it has en suites or just washbasins in rooms)
- St Gabriels (all female)
However, I know you say you don't want to have problems with cooking, but you will have to learn to deal with it in second year anyway, when you move into a shared house. In my opinion, it's best to learn in first year anyway, especially as not all of your meals are provided in catered accommodation, and the academic workload is smaller in first year anyway. -
Re: A quick accommodation question
40 weeks is fine and you're usually automatically given it.It covers freshers, holidays until the 21st of june. 51 wk contracts are reserved for postgrads and those who do nursing etc for placement. Although if you find you need a longer one for travels purposes/job etc I believe you can ask for a longer one.

Re: Best Halls of Residence? (The Big Accommodation Choices Thread Mark II)I've heard it is, especially if you are male.(Original post by Chaofan88)
Is Asheburne hall really oversubscribed?
