Sorry, what? I couldn't hear you over the sound of your inferior American electronics and morbid obesity.

Electronics? Could have sworn we invented those too! :O

This has got to be a joke. These people are soo dumb.

Old stuff man. Any schmuck can find dumb people on the street to act up for entertainment. Hardly a representative sample. If you look around you'll see a similar video for Brits.

Obviously the video wouldn't show the people that answered the questions correctly.:sigh:

Politics aren't what I'm thinking about in this USA daydream. I'm thinking about big fancy houses and sunshine and everything OTT and busy and social... I'm rebelling against an Oxford degree by aiming to become a materialistic culture slut, methinks

Well, yes, there's certainly a lot of that. No one can complain about sunshine, that's unequivocally a good thing (well, UV rays and burning aside). Fancy houses are alluring, but to maintain such possessions there may well be a lot of stress, in that if your financial position decreases so does everything you've 'worked for'. If you have little, you have little to lose.

I suppose the social life is fine in that friends tend to make us all happier. Working in a high-paid job, however, doesn't always facilitate elevenses!

Also, maybe having such high expectations may make any fall to reality that there may be larger. On the other hand, maybe those expectations may allow you to be more demanding and thus improve your lifestyle.

In reality, politics is relevant though: the fact of the matter is that few people have such lifestyles, while most idolise them.

And, most importantly, do you really want to live like Paris Hilton? :p:

But, yes, rebel, please do! It's rarely a bad thing -- even if your rebellion is, ironically, a rather conservative one.

Not much of a football fan but I know the Superbowl is coming up!

Must be actors. No one thinks that the Berlin Wall is in Israel

Yeah! We're not in it though. :frown:
I don't think I could handle American television. I don't even tend to watch TV, but knowing that American infomercials and crass humour is lurking only a finger's press away would drive away my sanity rather quickly.

She's skinny, rich, and does nothing that isn't for her own enjoyment. Yes, fine, alright, I would kill for that right now. But I'm just being grumpy because it's January, it's bleak, it's boring, and I'm sick of failing to be intellectual.

I know the fall would be greater, but so long as I don't move there until I have a level of financial security, I'm hoping it would work out.

Boo. Who's in it? New England..again?

I'd watch the Superbowl for the commercials only.

Berlin's a common Jewish surname. It's not as dumb as not knowing the number of sides in a triangle or what the United Kingdom is. Man, that really is dumb.

DISCLAIMER: I'm drunk. But I would love to live in Orange County or Beverly Hills - both look like the sort of place you could forget that poverty or world hunger even existed and you could wallow in your own wealth and get enough surgery to be very attractive forEVER. Good old TV, it shows me the truth of the world.

:p: Well, I'm one of those things, and it isn't necessarily the most alluring, but -- despite what I might say -- I'd take the penthouse suite and the sex tape too!

Ah, it's the winter blues. But Oxford is beautiful, isn't it? I'd say that it has more character than California. But then, I would, because I'm not there and you are!

If you have a dream though, however silly or even brilliant, there's nothing too wrong with wanting to see it through. It's too easy to be cynical.

The cost of most public universities actually ranges between $8k-15k a year, and the government gives a $4k grant to just about everyone who needs it (Pell Grant).

I wish. The $8-$15K doesn't include living expenses, which are around $10K more. Pell Grants only go to those w/extreme need.
Private universities are seriously expensive with a price tag around $45-$55K a year. The financial aid is dwindling right now b/c the economy sucks.

Anyway, to answer your question OP--
cons:
-public transportation sucks/doesn't exist except in very large cities
-the weather is only good in parts of the country
-seriously ignorant people
example: a kid in my US HISTORY class in HIGH SCHOOL asked if the Revolutionary war came before or after the US Civil war
-people don't care about world events
-materialism
-blinding patriotism -- the US is the best country God's ever given to man, etc
-the attitude that you are not responsible to anyone around you (which is why there is such a huge resistance to socialism and the idea of universal healthcare)

pros:
-high standard of living
-safe
-diversity
-the country is extremely different depending on region-- going from the south to new england is like going to another country

Not everyone is fat. How unfair. If you live in a place like LA you'll see that everyone is exercising constantly because the weather is amazing year round.

It's funny though, I've been obsessed with moving to the UK. I'd give my right arm to go to Oxford OP!
My dream is to drive on the great freeways of Ohio, trek on the great American outdoors at Oregon, and to party at Vegas. Will my dream ever come true?

Hahaha, sex tapes. One of these days, "One night in Oxford" will be hitting a laptop screen near you... pahaha.

Oxford seems lovely but when you're here it's so tiny and boring! It really is. The colleges are pretty but that's literally it. I'd rather be here than South Wales (yuck), but I've still not found where I really feel I belong and am happy.

Christ, where have been living? Northern Alaska?! It's practically a policy that Walmart employees are all illegal Mexicans or majorly ghetto blacks.

Indiana, which is close enough to Alaska. :p:

Come to think of it, I do like the idea of the American road trip. That's more of the thrill of the adventure than liking any particular way of life though.

I want to be Jack Kerouac.
