South America in Winter

Hi,

I'm really hoping that I'll get to travel South America sometime before I settle into a full time career, but I'm already at uni and so the options are a gap year after or travel during the summer after graduation. I know that this is Winter in South America, but although colder it is also drier. Has anyone been in the continent during British summer months? It's sometimes hard to tell what it's really like from climate charts... is it unbearably cold, not too bad etc, what kind of clothes (ie. how many layers!)?
