Deloitte Scholars vs. IBM Futures

I'm currently in a position where I have been offered a place with Deloitte for my gap year. I accepted since IBM were being so slow in telling me dates for the assessment day. Well, the day after they responded. The assessment day is in two weeks.

My problem is, do I respond to the email saying that I won't be continuing with my app due to accepting an offer elsewhere? Or do I continue on with it to see what it's like?

IBM is closer to me so it is good in that sense and I know loads of people there, it's a huge place, etc. Deloitte however appears to have a greater range of work and it's also external work rather than internal. However, my office is smaller and I'm the only scholar so I'm worried about how much I'll mix with the grads and so on.

Basically, if any of you have worked on these schemes, please tell me as much as you can about your experiences, what it's like working there, etc. so I can make an informed decision.

Plus, i presume Deloitte wouldn't be all that pleased if I went back on my acceptance. I do think I'd enjoy the work more there, plus it has all the benefits of ongoing bursaries and work experience whilst at uni, which IBM doesn't have. I think it's just the location and size of my workplace that's making me indecisive.

Thanks :h:

Well, if you prefer IBM more, what I would do is go through with the IBM application process. If you get in, then tell Deloitte that you'd prefer not to go. If you don't get in, then there's no problem. And if you get in and decide Deloitte is better, then you can just politely turn down the IBM offer. Deloitte won't like it, no, but it's not like they would do anything about it.

Congrats, by the way . I wish I was on the Deloitte/IBM gap year thing but I hadn't planned my gap year :frown:.

Thanks :h: So I'll probably just go to the assessment day on the 17th. That will give me a chance to see what it's like there and so I may even make my decision after that. After the assessment day you have a final interview.

I think the Deloitte will certainly be better work experience. In fact, come to think of it, I think I may have to go for it anyway because I'm planning on picking up History AS in my gap year by teaching myself. If I worked with IBM, it's 9 months as opposed to 7 so I wouldn't finish til May which would make it pretty difficult to teach myself History. Who knows though. I'll probably go along anyway, just to keep my options open.

What did you end up doing?

Wasting my time on TSR :sigh:. I'm trying to find a job but no one's willing to hire me :bawling:.

I waste my time on TSR too much :sigh: I should be doing maths right now.

And yeah, I quit my job to focus on college and now I'm poor. No one seems to be hiring at the moment :shifty:
Will you be travelling or anything?

I should probably be doing maths too - I haven't done any serious maths since December.

And yeah, I'll probably be going to China and maybe the Galapagos Islands, but it'd be on my parents' money which is frowned upon I think :indiff:. I'd prefer to get a job and pay for it myself though.

Don't make a decision yet and just do the IBM assessment in two weeks then really think things through. The decideing factor for Deloitte might be the social side of things especially considering that most of your friends will be at uni during your gap year and the only way to socialise will be through work so you should consider that.

Also, with the doing an extra A level during the programme, the length of the Futures programme shouldn't really affect you as you should try to organise your time around it like studying during the weekends and after work although this may be tiring.

How do you already know the size of your office?

EDIT - I just noticed this sounds more like a pro-IBM propaganda. :sigh:

I'd definitely go to the IBM centre, if nothing else it will give my more experience. Then make a decision on which you like to sound of best and go with that. Deloitte wont be that bothered about you changing your mind, they're not going to struggle to fill the vacant place.

I don't know much about the IBM scheme but I'm pretty knowledgeable on Deloitte and the scholar scheme, I did my gap year in the Leeds office last year.

Will you be going into audit? I can honestly say the variety of work you get is comprehensive, in my 7 months I pretty much covered all there was to do on site (missed out on the planning and reporting, but they're the most boring anyway!). I made really good friends with plenty of graduates and wasn't treated at all different by them or managers, partners etc.

Feel free to PM me if you have any specific questions about the scheme or Deloitte in general, I'm more than happy to answer them.

Meh. I decided to withdraw from IBM. Which my be stupid considering i don't know my service line and would rather die than go into Tax. But, I realised, IBM is 9 months which interferes with the rest of my gap year.

Also, I'd have to get to London by 8.30am for the assessment day and it's just so my effort and costs for something I don't think I want to go for. They don't detail work you do on the site so i'm a little skeptical. But from what I can gather, work is very internal and even though it's a huge environment compared to Deloitte's southampton office, I would certainly prefer working at Deloitte.

How likely is it I would get my preferred service line? Would I be right to assume that I've been given Audit, having been interviewed by an audit manager who kept saying what it is like to work in audit, and by an audit partner who kept saying what is so good about Audit? I really, really don't want to work in tax.

I thought on the Deloitte scheme you apply for what area you want or am I mixing that up with something else?

Since you're the only S'hampton scholar next year your preference wont make a difference, you'll get put in whichever service line has requested a scholar. If I remember correctly it will be Audit, you could send Marianne an email asking her to confirm. If you do get put in tax I wouldn't worry too much, I've spent 8 weeks in tax this year and, although I'd recommend Audit, it definitely has some benefits like less travel, better social life, nice desk in a warm office (in audit you could end up anywhere).

Best thing to do is send an email to Marianne, she should get back to you within a few days.

You apply for an office and then give your preferred service line, but as I've said in my post above, there wont be an option as there will only be one scholar in S'hampton next year.

****, so I could just be made to do Tax. So why would they put me through all that audit stuff rather than just tell me i won't have a choice :s-smilie:

I'm regretting withdrawing from IBM if that's the case. Really don't want to work for Deloitte if it's in tax.

Wouldn't it be better to just call them up and ask that way you know before hand and have enough time to call IBM if you want.

I've withdrawn from the system so you can't reapply. They'll be out of office now I presume. I'm so screwed :erm: God I hate my life. If they knew I'd not get a choice, i wish they could've just told me rather than talking about audit for ages in my interviews. I liked the idea of getting to travel. Staying in one office all day will make me depressed.

:hugs:
You are not screwed.
Just call Deloitte up tomorrow asking if it's audit or tax. Then call IBM tomorrow depending on the answer from Deloitte and tell them you made a mistake and you are still interested. Just make sure you send them an email as well as call them up.

They probably put you through interviews with auditors because the S'hampton place is in audit. I wouldn't get stressed out before you know for sure. If it's going to bother you that much call Marianne in the morning.
I think it's highly unlikely IBM will accept me back onto my application, since when you withdraw, you can't reapply, plus applications for the roles have closed. Ugh, I'm feeling miserable now. Even if it really is in audit, I'm gonna stress for the rest of the night. I wish I hadn't withdrawn

It is pretty unlikely but there is no harm but there's no harm in trying.

Also, is Southampton usually Audit then? I mean, has that been the case in the past then? The lack of travel in Tax would drive me insane.
