Thanks guys

I'm still waiting....

I am a second year on this course, currently about to start my second semester at the Uni of Melbourne. I can not speak highly enough of the course, any specific questions?

Yeah I do, how do they decide where you go for your second year (as it happens I really want to go to Melbourne). Like can only one person go to Melbourne and its decided on exam results?

Also how many people take it in your year

Cheers
you decide where you want to go in your second year, you put down 3 places and depending on how well you do in your exams determines which selection you get (typically over 60% is first choice etc - unless serious over subscription), i am here with another 3 people off the course so in no way is it limited to one. i think everyone (bar the first year failures who went to erasmus unis anyway got their first choice). there is an exam hurdle, i think it is 60/65% in your first semester, it sounds low but when everyone else is arsing around you actually have to work but its definately doable. i think there were 50 originally in my year 15 people dropped out/changed course, as a result last year took about 35, maybe less, as far as i am aware (im a course rep) the course is generally oversubscribed.

i got an offer for this course this year too
if you'd be choosing your course once more would you choose this one?

the uni said this year that there were only 10-20 places, is that true or is a lie (didnt want to say lie but not sure why if it was 50 how it is now so low)

So is that 60% based on how other people in your year do, or just a figure they set.

Sounds like a fair way to do it. I was really worried as I didn't want to go to a country where they didn't speak English, I’m not much of a linguist.

Also is there a definitive list of the choices you can go to, the website just mentions a few.

Sorry for all the questions, just intrigued.
yeh they said that when i applied but the final group was clearly larger, i never ascertained whether this was due to nottingham/all unis being money grabbing or whether it reflected the quality of candidates... who knows but what i do recall being told was that due to the drop out rate from my year being so hi and a couple of other reasons they were going to drop the intake. it might be worth getting in touch with some 1st years and see how many are on the course now.

the 60% is based on your grade only, remember, however, that you apply to another university, the 60% might not necessarily guarentee your place if the uni you are applying to only has 3 places and 3 people got 80% and you got 60%. i only know of two people in my year that didnt get their first choice and they love where they went anyway!

if i had to pick a course again it would still be this one, not only do you get an MSci, while most people these days get a good degree, not only do you get to study abroad for a whole year but the Nottingham experience is everything i could ask for both in uni and outside.

great to hear that
and how does it look like with going to france? will the course still be in english? and is there a list of univerisities somewhere or maybe you know what unis do they offer in france or austria?

and another one: what's with the costs when you go abroad? what do you have to pay for and how much?

I applied for this but they gave me an alternate offer for straight politics.. I'm a bit disappointed because I really wanted IR + GI and it would've been my first choice no matter what.. but at the same time, I figure that Politics is broader and it doesn't lock you into doing a masters.. anyway, congratulations on getting in. I've heard there were only 10 - 20 places...
and how does it look like with the tuition loan when I'm doing MSci?

The same thing happened to me, I was really disapointed, I think there should be more courses like this one across the country but i'm happy with politics, i spoke to one of my friends who had the same thing happen to him and he took the politics offer and he is loving it

Yeah I'm starting to think it might be better this way.. and you can still take a year abroad in australia or new zealand or canada.. are you considering it as your first choice? I'm probably gonna pick it as my first choice.

yeah i think so. you have a lot more options if you do it this way. My friend said that one of the reasons he chose the IR course they do was because of the gap year but because he has enjoyed his first year so much and made some really good friends he has decided not to take the year out- and he could becuase he had the option to. you can still specialise your degree down to IR in the 2nd and 3rd years and you also get an option as to which masters you take so i guess they're really similar anyway
Same thing, happended to me. I 've got a straight Politics offer aswell. Any of you going to the March Open day ? :teeth:

Yep
two things to consider are that doing this course means you get a student loan during your masters and it only takes one extra year. i also know a guy who didnt want to go away because he didnt want to leave his friends etc, that said i am going to be living with some of my best friends from my first year - dont think they will forget you! also if you dont go away you have to drop down to straight politics. finally, the course is what you make it, the first year modules are nearly exactly the same as straight politics (apart from you only have one elective not two as one module counts for double credits) after that your course is as diverse as you want.

Just out of question, if you are going to an Australian uni (which sounds amazing  ) how does it work with semesters, don't they have different term times to us.

Are you enjoying Melbourne, looking forward to the future, it was the Uni that really made me sit up, in that list.
Got an offer (AAA or AA+Welsh Bacc). Desperately want to go there. Hopefully see some of you at the Open Day?

yeh their semesters are in reverse to those in england, clearly they take their longer holiday over the christmas break as this is their summer time. so when you arrive your first semester is their second semester you then have december until march off (do as you please, work, travel intern etc) then your second semester is the equiv. of their first semester.

this can cause some issues with regards to the standard they expect you to be working at but this eventually works itself out.

as for life in melbourne, its AMAZING, i honestly wouldnt want to be anywhere else. currenty its o week so lots of partying - just got back from the amazing race, had a beer outside by the pool in 36 degree sunshine, later we have a courtyard party. life here is unbelievable.

the future looks bright, im applying for internships back home and also looking into a skiing holiday in new zealand when i finish. cant wait for my third year and to live with some of my best friends from first year.

good look to all those who are applying/ have offers, i should be taking part in open days in the coming summer, who knows i might see you there!

feel free to ask about what im studying, where i am living or any other course related q's
