I was wondering about the monitor/tv point as well. I want to take my tv as a monitor and to play DVDs on (I know I might not get much time, but I can't live without occasionally just shutting off infront of a DVD). I don't want to pay a licence fee as I have no interest in watching the TV but it was an expensive monitor and I don't want to leave it at home! Surely it is up to the TV licence people to prove that you are using it as a TV, it is still innocent until proven guilty over here in the land of the free, right?

Yeah, I feel the same way. If you're worried about it, perhaps call the number that was in my earlier post to double check? It should be fine, though, going by what the website said.
If it can't actually recieve TV broadcasts then you don't need a licence (the licence is required for any device capable of receiving and decoding the broadcasts); if you don't have an aerial/aerial lead (if there's a fited socket) then you don't have a device capable of receiving the signals

You're an idiot.

"Innocent til' proven guilty" - you ever heard that saying?

Twát.

Oh calm down, never been wrong in your life?
I'm not planning to bring a TV. I seriously doubt I'll have the time to sit watching TV and PC + iPlayer + 4OD + DVDs should be sufficient.

Yep, from the official website:

So, in theory, it should be fine as long as you don't bring an aerial! Hooray, no fines.

Your post also says that it should be powered by internal batteries too, so you would need to ensure this before ensuring no fines.

I was also thinking about the game consoles thing.

A Wii would be a great item around which to socialise and de-stress.

Its an either/or thing . So either it shouldn't have aerial plugged in, or it should be powered by batteries.

Its basically so that people can own a portable TV (like handheld ones) without having to pay another TV licence.

Mm, I'm taking my digital piano but I doubt there'll be room for it. We'll drive up with it from London and then if it's too big, my parents will take it away again. I know there'll be loads of pianos around and I'll want to practise on a proper one obviously, but I'll miss the 3am improv sessions that I've fallen into if I don't =(. Before you spend loads of money though, I'd find out how big the room'll be. Most won't fit an 88-key affair, which I assume you'll want as you're grade 8.

Yeah I'm thinking perhaps a 76-key one. Can just stand it up in the corner of the room or something.

I've been playing for so long, I really don't wanna lose any of my skills! Plus, having to go to a practise room means that I'll end up not finding the time, whereas if it's in my room I can have a little de-stress there with no worries at all.

And I'm worried that, even though I'm grade 8, I'll still make an idiot of myself in comparison to some of the others!! It is Oxford, after all!

On the games consoles front, I might bring my telly and my N64/Gamecube (which one??) after the first Christmas, depending on how much time I have or what others have done.

Multiplayer Mario Kart/Goldeneye must be a hit with the halls though, surely!

I wouldnt take a TV. For a start you'll struggle to fit it into some rooms! Also everyone watches TV in the JCR (presuming you're living in college in your first year) so be sociable and watch with them. Plus the fact that you dont really have much time to watch to watch TV so when people do its normally on i player or 4OD. Most people just use their laptops for everything.

I also dont know anyone with a games console, though some JCRs have them.

There are lots of practice rooms with pianos in, if you want to get a stage piano get a good one like this: http://www.imuso.co.uk/ProductDetail.asp?StockCode=ST00479 woops didn't realise the price so its probably best to just use a practice room.

There's no reason why she'd need anything that expensive at all - there's plenty of digital pianos that are just as good (at being digital pianos) for a lot cheaper.

Mm, 76 is all right but for proper stuff you'll need an 88. Mine sits happily in my room and I'm seriously dreading not being able to take it. I took my grade 8 a couple of years ago but hate practising in front of other people and cannot/will not improvise unless I have headphones or everyone's out. So yeah, really hope mine fits. It's not very portable either - 's an electric piano which screws into standing position with pedals and all, so not like I can shut it away when I need to. But anyway, we shall see.

I know a couple of people at Oxford who have tvs/games consoles and they prove very popular with others - and same with Cambridge. I'd say go for it if you really want although be aware that distractions will be plentiful anyway and you may/will need to actually concentrate on work. Nothing to stop you playing with friends, though.

I know I said I didn't realise how much it cost, but I'm saying there isn't really any need seeing as there are so many practice rooms with Pianos in Oxford and Cambridge.

Which college is your offer from?

Also, Super Smash Bros.
When I went for interview at my college in the bar they were playing Worms on N64 on a MASSIVE wide screen TV! I think maybe you should take your gamecube (afterall it's not big) and see if you'll be able to play it on college TVs and if not you could buy a really cheap TV there. With regards to pianos, the only thing I have to contribute is that i've heard that quite a few colleges make you clear out your stuff in the holidays - not sure if it's correct though - and lugging a big keyboard home on the train will be an interesting journey if so! . TBH Oxbridge colleges will have several wonderful pianos for your use, it seems a bit of a faf to bring your own when these will be just a couple of minutes walk from your room.

:ditto:

It might be worth actually waiting until you start the term and you know how big your room is and where it is. I have a clavinova in my room but a) that's provided by college and b) as it's college property, the college have it moved everytime I get a new room. You wouldn't want to buy a digital piano and then find out that not only is it going to take up most of your room, but that it's up some narrow, winding old wooden staircase and you're on the top floor...

As for being scared about other pianists, you just have to find a time when they're not there! I once used my Faculty's practice rooms, got scared off by the virtuosos there and ran away ( :getmecoat: ). Though I later figured that if I go at 8am ( ), no one else is ever there! Besides, the brilliant thing about the collegiate system is that your college would have a piano somewhere (though quality will vary!) which not many people would be using (musos plus a few other keen pianists like yourself), so there'd be no need to be intimidated!
