Default Exercise bikes?

Ok so I want to lose weight and realise as well as cutting down on eating crap I need to exercise. I usually go swimming twice a week for 40 minutes but I want something to do at home as well so was considering buying an exercise bike. My question is are they any good in the aid of weight loss? I know that my thighs will be worked out but will it burn off a significant amount of calories? My reasoning for a bike was I have a small flat so I could get a foldaway one to use whilst watching tv rather than sitting around.

Bikes aren't too bad, but your upper body is largly inactive so you won't burn as much as swimming, etc. There's a great page on www.bodybuilding.com which will calculate energy use in various cardio excercises, but I can't seem to find it right now.

I bought a bike ages ago and to be honest I hardly used it, but then i bought a outdoor bike and use that all the time, with running etc. I just found the indoor bike too boring, but that might just be me because i prefer to be outside. Although even at the gym i hardly ever use the bike.

If you want some exercises to do in front of the tv, do burpees, tabata star jumps, tuck jumps, lunges, squats, pushups, pullups, etc.
