It's a shame that thro' seems archaic now.
It probably appears in dictionaries (SOURCE???) because it is often used as a part of other words such as 'Thru-hiking' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thru-hiking

It can have other meanings as well as being a simplified form of 'through'...
