saving for gap year

I'd like to know:

How long it took you?
How much you got?
Doing what?
Did you have to use some of your earnings for rent etc.

I have a year to work full time, but will still be paying half rent and for other things- How much of my earnings am I likely to save in say 6 months to a year?

I spent 7 months working for Deloitte in Leeds. I was earning about £1,000 after tax per month, paying £100 in rent to my Mum and spending the majority of the rest. I managed to save up about £1,000 in 7 months but that was without really tightening my belt. Deloitte gave me £1,500 for travelling so I left with £2,500 and came back with -£2,000! Worth every penny though.

I cant answer your question exactly, because I went down a different route.. I finished 6th year, went to Borneo for 4 months, started Uni - and since have been working term time and been taking 4 month trips every summer. No 'gap year' as such.

Pre Uni.. I fundraised 4k and went to Borneo for 4 months.

First year I used my loan.. went to SE Asia for 4 months. Spent about 3k..

Last year I was working in a garage for about 5 months and went to Papua New Guinea and back to SE Asia for 4 months.. cost about 5k.

I've been working in a Cash Management company for about 3 months, so far I've saved about 3k, finishing in May I should have about 7k including my loan. I will go to India for 4 months and I'm budgeting £1.5K.

The rest of the money is being saved, I plan on working again once I get back from India until June/July the following year when I graduate with around £14-15k to get good and lost for a couple of years.

It all depends on your lifestyle and job.

deffo getting lost after uni....
I'm hoping to have saved £3000 by the time i leave my job at the end of march, i'm temping, I earn just over £250 a week after tax been working since early December and i probably already had about £500 odd in my account when i started (tbh i have no idea) & also maybe got a little bit of money at christmas. I live rent free so my main out goings are the car and socialising...hmm I monitor my spendings pretty closely - but i still like to feel like i can have a good time :P.
It really depends entirely on your job and on your lifestyle.
