Accommodation...again!

I don't know when I'll get my accommodation forms thorugh, but just looking at the uni website, I'm not too worried about whether I get my 1st (and looks like this year, only) choice. I'm going to put somewhere really competitive down, but if I don't get it I won't be too worried.

Couple of q's though: 1. Are there any really awful places to stay, or are people generally happy no matter what?
2. Is anyone considering/does anyone know anything about the non-hall residences like Hawthorns, Winkworth house, etc? Good/bad points?

Hiya, obviously as I'm not at Bristol I can't really help you but ill say what i think!
The non-hall residences don't really appeal to me, because I want quite an active social life and want to mix with as many people as possible, and I'm not sure if you would get that not being in halls for your first year. But, having said, I do want self-catered so I wouldnt mind too much really. And, as I'm probably going to put a competitve hall down, there's a good chance I may not get it and would be put in one of those houses, because I'll specify I want self-catered. Hmmmmm.

What do you think your going to choose? I've narrowed it down to Goldney and Durdham (I think!)

I really love the look of Goldney, but I'm a bit worried about putting it down because only being able to make one choice this year, I'll probably be put int he quietest, least competitive hall/house. Hmm! I want to go self-catering too, and I'd rather be in Clifton, but then Manor and Goldney are two of the most competitive. I think Wills looks nice too, and I suppose I'd get used to the long walk from Stoke Bishop, lol! I haven't looked too much at Durdham, what do you like about it?

Well, its all en-suite..liking that a lot! Its apparently the most modern, and the rooms are quite big. The kitchens look nice too can't rememeber where I saw a picture) cos they have a table with chairs, but also comfy chairs so its also like a littlelounge and would be good for socialising I think! Try the jcr website (www.durdham.co.uk) or the alternative prospectus site, it does look nice!
The only thing that worries me is that its meant to be a bit quiet - but i'm thinking I could change that! It msut depend on the year group really. So thats the only thing thats putting me off.
I love Goldney too - it seems perfect. But very competitve. Also, apparently Stoke Bishop is better socially, because more people are there. I think I could cope with the walk - it'll be a good way of keeping fit/sobering up in the morning!
Wills - I saw it on the open day and it looked so amazing. But its catering so thats a draw back.
Are you excited about going to Bristol? I am!

Edit: Oops, the link is wrong - sorry! I'll try and find out the right one...

Yeah, Stoke Bishop appeals because it's more sociable, and I guess you would get used to the walk! I think I'll probably be put into University Hall because I'll ask for self-catering, and it doesn't look too good :frown: Ah well, I hope we both get our 1st choice! :p: And yep, I'm sooooo excited! I hope I get the grades!!!

Well, the bus just stopped outside and we wondered around. The building is really historic, and it looks like an oxbridge college. I had a look in the window and I think it was the bar I saw..it seemed a bit posh for me. Really nice chairs around little tables. There was also snow falling when I was there- made it look a bit Harry Potter like! It is very impressive, and would be a lovely place to stay, but I don't think its right for me. I'm not making any generalisations about the people that live there - theres probably just a diverse range as there is in any hall but I think I'd prefer soomething a bit more modern  If it wasn't catering I'd probably consider it tho, everyone seems to give good reviews about it and the building and grounds really are gorgeous!
Where do you think you wanna apply for?

Oooh random question: Anyone know what Durdham/Goldneys bars are like?

Wills is great. It's a piece of Oxford in Bristol. I couldn't go inside the day i visited but just looking at the outside ... it's impressive.

It'll probably be my first choice. Even though i doubt i'll get in.

I went round Wills when I went down to Bristol  It is very impressive! I was actually completely amazed by the fact that Wills is also nowhere near 40 minutes from the university buildings! Basically, there are two quads; rooms are very good.

It is possible to organise to go and look round Wills, and the very friendly woman I spoke to said that if you want Wills as your first choice you need to show some evidence of having specifically chosen Wills as the best hall for YOU.

The students I spoke to were generally quite public school, though not in an overtly bad way. It was not, however, completely public school.

My concern with going to Wills would be seeming like a pauper when I'm doing my part-time job etc. Another flaw of Wills is that you get no guaranteed vacation residence, and even if you get it- it is quite expensive. This is worse considering the fact that the rent for 30-week is not really much better than the 38-week lets for some other halls.

Overall, Wills is a great choice. I don't think I'll apply- I'm probably going to go down to Bristol again and look at all the halls and then make my decision. The heavy degree of public school students in the hall is, IMO, a result of the obsession with communal dining and formal dinners and the focus on hall sports etc.

I would definitely look round, preferably during term time, and really try to get a feel for the place.
