How does it take 8 months to open a shop?
Maybe they need to wait for another shop to leave. I thought I heard someone saying the Marks and Spencers in the Grafton was closing but it was still open the last time I went there - maybe Primark will take that other. I guess they need a fairly big space or it wouldn't be worth it.

Edit: nevermind. Where is it going to be then?

Where John Lewis used to be I think. There was a short article in TCS or Varsity about it recently, talking about the refit 'revitalising' the area or something...

So i just went to Subway on Mill Road (as I do at least 4x a week), and a new thing called "Baguette Land" (I've got the name wrong, but it was words to that effect) has appeared next to it, which'll probably be opening soon. It's sooo going to fail miserably, and I wondered why the owners thought there was a demand for a place this like that, in that particular area.

So it got me thinking, what things do we need in Cambridge?

For me, there is one thing that comes to mind - a cheap card shop. In Nottingham we have loads of shops called things like "Card Warehouse", "The Card Factory", etc, where you can buy a massive A2 card for £1, that kind of thing. In Cambridge (including the grafton centre) all we have are Clintons, Paperchase, Scribbler, which are all a lot more high-end. where am i meant to get cards for people i don't particularly like from? There is that stand on the market, but markets are icky.

anyone else have any other thoughts?
Does Cambridge have a home bargains? Its necessary.

I want krispy kremes too! (Although if they ever opened one in Cambridge I'd probably stop fitting into my jeans after a month...)

Am otherwise fairly happy with Cambridge shops/etc I suppose, I like the fact that most of what you want/need is available within the city centre and so very convenient...

And as for public transport... I miss the days when all you had to do was show your unicard and you could get on any Citi bus for 50p! :frown:

Whole heartedly agree with wilko, and despite the whole ethical doo dahs, a Primark would be ace... I mean apart from normal clothes, its soooo annoying not being able to find cheap things for bops (like horrible tights you'll never wear again!)

Also, poundland or whatever it is at the Grafton is rubbish :frown: ... I want more cheap alternatives dammit!

My biggest wish would be for that tesco to just be a lil' bit closer!
There's a butchers and fish and chip shop on Burleigh Street, which is just down the side of the Grafton Centre.
A decent indoor climbing centre that doesn't require more than an hour's worth of travel on at least two forms of public transport to get to

I miss climbing :bawling:

an easily accessible hardware store/garden centre
:ditto: And I'm so annoyed at Woolworths going bust. Something like a Wilkinson and an IKEA in decent distance....
Revolution is my Name
as a fellow resident of Nottingham, I'm far more of the opinion that the card shops are partially what contribute to it being a **** hole - just card shops and charity shops on every single high street (both of the ones you mentioned on my local one)

Have to say - I'm quite glad no nasty card shops are blemishing my field of vision! Chewwy: buy cards at Oxfam! :poke:
EDIT: It seems my Wilkos suggestion wasn't knew  And I would love a decent supermarket in reasonable distance (I don't have a bike and basically don't have time to go out to some of these places in termtime) - but I realise its probably difficult with the entire of central Cambridge being too historic to touch (not that I'd want it any other way)

Please don't mention primark!! There's one here and i hate hate hate it. When i was in cambridge i didn't notice anything missing, but that's probably as i'm used to coming from a town where there's nothing and it takes hours to get a bus. Anything is an improvement to be honest, i suppose it's different when you live there.

Leala! Long time no speak! I'm from a stupidly wee town too and have nothing to complain about either ha ha

You could get the bus, assuming you were going to buy enough to make the ~£3 worth it.

No I really could not. Last time I took the bus out to Trumpington park&ride to make use of Waitrose for a big shop and one or two specialist ingredients I needed it took up the better part of an afternoon just because buses are so damn slow! I mean it was 35mins one way, for crying out buckets! Its just not worth it, and taxis would be too expensive. Not to mention that in order to justify the time and energy expended you tend to go for a big shop, which means more bags worth of stuff than you can easily carry and a rather painful and stressful time getting it all onto the bus and off again having climbed off, with only two arms available for use.
No... I keep that sort of thing for holidays, seeing as I'm here then too.

There are few things in life I hate as much as shopping!

35mins seems pretty reasonable

Or get like 4 people together and get a taxi for the same sort of price. Sorted. Or find out who owns a car and go with them.

35mins is pretty reasonable
1hr and 10mins total travel vs 20mins total walking. Hmmm tough one. Basically, no it isn't for term!

If I could join forces with other people needing groceries (which I've tried) we'd be getting Tescos delivery service instead, obviously.

I'm not trying to argue that all these options are unrealistic for everyone else, I'm merely stating that they're not practical for me... which is something I should probably know best about...

It's only 10 mins walk away? Surely that counts as being within a 'reasonable distance', you can't have it both ways.

I don't think there is anything useful within 10 mins walk of where I am.

I know...hi :-) i wouldn't mind if my town was nice and had nothing but it's rubbish in all aspects :-( these people don't know they're born-a beautiful city with millions of shops from what i saw! I was amazed, i mean i walked round the streets and round each corner there was something worth seeing. I understand their frustration at the apparent lack of supermarkets though. We have plenty of them!
