Re: Oxford Chemistry - 2010It's more like 98% do and 2% don't. Only a couple of people were accepted last year without maths. The director of studies for chemistry (Dr Nick Green) said that unless you had a good reason for not taking maths, it could be difficult to get in.(Original post by dancing.barefoot)
I think I read that 90% of those that get in have Maths.. Which means that 10% don't, so there's still a chance.

Re: Oxford Chemistry - 2010I saw his Grout-ness the other day. He looked at me as if he recognised me. Probably as the guy who, when not asleep or at home, was yelling things along the lines of 'you mean x-squared... you useless old git'(Original post by Turdburger)
I remember a guy from Annes in my year saying he and the other people without Alevel maths or equivalent had to have extra lessons (with Dr. Grout
)
About 7 of them if I recall. In my year anyway. -

Re: Oxford Chemistry - 2010Hi
I'll probably be applying to Oxford for Chemistry this year...there's still a part of me that's considering applying for NatSci at Cambridge instead though
The colleges I like most at the moment are Hertford and St Anne's

Re: Oxford Chemistry - 2010Mostly physics, to be honest.(Original post by TigerJack)
Hey cpchem, what questions did you get asked at interview?
Of those two, I'd recommend Hertford over Anne's.(Original post by lil_miss_rapunzel)

Re: Oxford Chemistry - 2010Oh ok thanks(Original post by cpchem)

I think at the moment I'm leaning towards Hertford anyway, but why would you recommend Hertford over Anne's if you don't mind me asking?

Re: Oxford Chemistry - 2010i) it's more central, and just a nicer college generally speaking,(Original post by lil_miss_rapunzel)

ii) the Hertford chemists seem more human than the Anne's ones,
iii) I like the Hertford tutors. -
Re: Oxford Chemistry - 2010Worcester's the better move of those two, in my opinion. We share some tutors with them, and both Grant and Rachel are fantastic. You'd also have an unbelievably good maths tutor in first year(Original post by Mrcarrot)
I think, having taken a look, that if I do apply then it will be to one of either Hertford and Worcester

Re: Oxford Chemistry - 2010If you are predicted 3 A's with an A in chem and maths you will be fine. I assume you meant disadvantaged in terms of a possible intnerview?(Original post by Limonene)
Hello, I just joined and this is my first post
I'm applying to Oxford for Chemistry this year. Am on a gap year at the moment with my A2 results. Would having Bs in two Chemistry modules out of the six put me at a disadvantage, even if I got an A overall? -
Re: Oxford Chemistry - 2010Yes, I meant it in terms of interview(Original post by DeanK22)

They'd surely see two Bs on my UCAS form for those modules under Chemistry and was just worrying about that. Thanks

Re: Oxford Chemistry - 2010There is a rumour that Oxford see module grades every year - the only way you can tell is if you phone up an admissions tutor - though last year they certainly did not see any module results.(Original post by Limonene)

Re: Oxford Chemistry - 2010
I'm also applying for Chemistry at Oxford...possibly at LMH or Magdalen college; not sure yet (any advice). I'm wandering whether or not I'm at a slight disadvantage not taking Physics at AS. I took Chemistry, Biology, Maths, French and English Literature and got As in them all.
Also, any suggested reading apart from New Scientist and 'Chemistry Review' magazines? Possibly something that doesn't turn out to be a history book or too full of physics...
Merci. -
Re: Oxford Chemistry - 2010Magdalen over LMH - nicer college, and better tutors (from what I've heard).(Original post by Lajtastic)

Not having done physics need not be an enormous disadvantage - you can pick up the important parts pretty quickly. Ditto further maths - that's basically the content of the first year maths course. Both are useful, neither are essential. I would say that it's advantageous to have at least one of those two, but not so much that it's going to put tutors off at first glance. -
Re: Oxford Chemistry - 2010I'd advise you to apply to LMH (but only because I'm considering Magdalen, and the less competition there is, the better.(Original post by Lajtastic)

Your advice seems sound enough for the most part, but I feel it's worth reminding you that people will be applying to universities other than Oxford too — universities that will likely be (potentially a lot) more interested in the personal statement.(Original post by DeanK22)
I would be surprised if the tutors glanced at your personal statement - but if you must do extra reading get a physics magazine or something. Do not mention you have read Sykes or Atkins - the interviewers will know that stuff inside out and will waste no time asking you about the stuff in there.
