??? A gap year is just a year out to do whatever you like before uni. You can do volunteer work if you want.
It's called volunteer work for a reason. You don't ever 'have' to do it.
Nope, it just means that you have a year out of education. Some chose to spend it volunteering as a way to fund travel or to build on their CV or just get a chance to find themselves, but it's not necessary. I spent mine mostly Working - getting work experience and saving money for uni in september... with a little bit of travel at the end.
If you're going to take a gap year you should do something other than wasting the whole year doing nothing. Some people volunteer, some people get a job, some people go travelling. Do whatever you want but make sure you use the time! :smile:

What about when you applied for university and have decided to take a gap year in the last minute? Would they let you do that?
