I am coming from the USA to attend 6th Form at a UK school starting September, but stories like those below horrify me! Britain is the only country in the Western world where this type of nonsense goes on. Why do kids there put up with this - is there no general outrage at being the only kids on earth treated like this? I made sure that my 6th Form has no such crap going on - it's uniform free but has some form of "appropriate attire" dress code. I plan to wear whatever I like and if it causes a problem for me, I'm willing to dig my heels in and not give an inch. I also made sure that students do not have to humiliate themselves all day by addressing 23 and 24 year old teachers as "Sir" or "Miss". Take a look at these:

Good thing you didn't come here any lower down our school system
Seriously though, learn to deal with it. Not all 6th forms here have uniforms..and we don't have too many 23/24 year old teachers teaching A Level subjects.
We dont have to wear uniforms and can pretty much wear what we want.
Teachers arent that young either, range from around 30-60, most of my teachers are about 40 maybe.
We dont called them sir/miss, we call them by their first names. Im pretty sure there is a lot of other colleges/sixth forms like mine as well.
High school is a different story, that is more like what you describe.
My Lord you are bunch of thin skinned weenies. Yes, the USA by and large does have a terrible system of public education, but, if standardized test scores are anything to go by, the UK is just as bad. Still none of you have responded as to why British kids are the only ones in the West treated like pure s*** at school.
At out sixth form we don't wear uniform at all, and we call our teachers by their first names
and to be quite honest, most of us would rather at least have some dress code - it's difficult finding new things each day, and I honestly think calling them Sir or Miss makes no difference, it shows respect - all of us slip back into it after saying it at school for so long
You can still look good in "appropriate attire" - plenty of shops over here take into account sixth forms with dress codes, and you'll look more of a fool if you stand out in the wrong way.
If you don't like the sixth form then go to a college, it generally be much more relaxed.
And if you really don't like the rules, why are you going?

Well as far as we're concerned, generally it's not all that bad.
Here, and in the US, the media blow things out of proportion, so you only the hear the 'terrible' treatment, whereas, if you actually properly experienced it for your whole life, it's fine, and the system isn't going to crap you up for life.
Edit: You're never really going to win this argument with your one man army are you....
And just for the record, I go to a standard 6th form (one at my high school), and I don't wear a uniform, but I have to call teachers Sir or Miss. It's just generally polite, and also sets an example to lower school children. It doesn't mean it's not relaxed still, we can have banter in class, as well as get down and work..

Don't like it? Then go back to the USA. Stop complaining or just go back. Seriously. And we say Sir or Miss because we learn manners. About the appropriate clothing: get mature. You're an adult know. You can wear whatever you want but it needs to be smart. You can't exactly wear a bikini top and jeans. Be sensible.
If you come to a different country you have to accept their way of life. Simple as. In this country part of our way of life is to way uniforms in school and be polite to our teachers and respect their authority.
Don't the majority of sixth forms have no uniform?
And to be honest, fair enough about the vest thing. Its not school uniform, and if its visible then she can't wear it. Its the school rules, deal with it.

Firstly believe it or not, teachers deserve the respect they are given- they are older than you, and know more than you in the vast majority of cases. (Funnily, it is my American stepmother who has always told me that respect should be shown to those older than you... apparently the decency does not extend to everyone from the states)
Also, schools have every right to institute a uniform policy if they so wish. It lessens the amount of 'fashion show'ing' that goes on wihtin the school, and defines it as a place for working, in whcih everyone is equal and has equal opportunities. I used to dread days where we could wear our own clothes at school because it turned into a battle of the fashions.
