I'm doing the English Language A (AQA course) and found that these books were really helpful:

* Sara Thorne - Advanced English Language
* English Language A2 and A2 Revision Express Guide
* Janet Holmes - Introduction to Sociolinguistics

Especially Sara Thorne because that has basically been my course book. These are not course specific books so they shold help you either way (apart from Holmes because thats really aimed at the topci that I study on my course (even though it isn't aimed at my course)).

Anyhoos, hope all i well and that has been some help.

Yeah, that Sara Thorne book is excellent. If you can get a hold of the bible as written by David Crystal (The Cambridge Encyclopedia of the English Language) in a library or buy it yourself, then that is fantastic too just so much stuff in it about everything!

Our school lent us a book called 'Working With Texts' published by Routledge which is pretty good too.
We use 'Grammar, Structure and Style: A Practical Guide to Advanced Level English Language' by Shirley Russell and the Sara Thorne book.
