and studying engineering/maths/physics/computer science/astronomy?

I want to apply for Talybont, will getting to my department be a problem, and are many from those courses living there?

It will take up to half an hour to get between the two, depending on where you are in Talybont and how fast you walk. As for whether many people doing those courses live in Talybont, yeah they do. Some people will choose places that are closer (Senghennydd Court being a popular option), but some will be determined to live in Talybont because of the fact that it's new(er) and has one of the "best" social scenes.

Living in Taly, not doing your courses, but have two mates doing engineering, so my answer is:

Don't apply here. Takes me 20minutes to get to Corbett Road, which is where the Law building is (that's opposite my language lectures, and a 2minute walk from my History ones), but it takes an extra 10 to get to Engineering, having been there once to meet a friend.
If you're uber-fit, and you want to do that every day, 9-5, be my guest and apply here. Otherwise, use your head and apply for Senghennydd Court, Hall, or even Gordon Hall, or one of those sort of places.

As for all this ********* about "Talybont has the best social scene" -******** does it. Sure, we have the football pitches, and the gym, and the social...but it's like every other halls. If you've got friends in another flat, you know people in that flat. To be honest, the nights out are in town, or in the Union - living in Senghetto is so much easier cause you can stumble back from town and not have to pay for taxis.
Sure, we're right next to Tesco, but you'd be just up the road from LIDL, Salisbury Road Tesco, Sainsburies, Marks&Spencers, and the whole of Crwys and Whitchurch Roads...
You're right by ALL the student pubs if you apply anywhere that's not Taly...

To be honest, I don't know where the hell people get this "Talybont has the best student social scene in Cardiff" - does it ********. I could have had the same social life living in Colum Hall, Gordon Hall, Uni Hall (admittedly that would have been extortionate on Taxis), Senghetto, or anywhere else.

As for 'many from the courses', I think the vast majority of Taly folk, at least in North, are a mishmash of subjects. Some are from RWCMD, some are doing geology, some are law, some are languages, some are sciences, a lot are medicine. In South, it seems to be mostly international students, I've noticed, although that might just be one or two of the houses have a larger concentration than elsewhere in Taly.

So, think it through - if your main priorities are getting to and from your course and having a good social life - go for somewhere closer to town. If your main priority is to join all the sport clubs in your first week, stay in Taly (unless you want the half hour walk to here as a 'warm-up' before you do an hour of fencing?)

Listen to the guy above, seriously. I only perpetuate the social scene thing because that's what I've heard and no one's refuted that until now.

... perhaps they do Music at Cardiff?

I have a small feeling you ended up with an unsocial flat CS?

Cathays pubs (esp Blackweir) aren't exactly that far from Taly.

I'm sure my friend from the house across is in RWC... but, you may be right. I've just taken it to be "music", since she's all operatic and such, and tied it to RWC. I totally forget Cardiff has a music department...

You may well be right, as all the ones I know in RWC ('for defo') are in Severn Point and 'Vicky Halls'. Maybe I'm just talking crap on that point, and she's a Cardiff musicker. Oops.

Quite the opposite. We're about as sociable as any other outgoing flat in Cardiff. It's just that Taly doesn't have the "bangin" social life that everyone belts on about. The Blackweir is overcroweded and overpriced for a pub that mainly caters to students and pensioners, while the majority of social activity takes place in Cathays (so, from the Woody onwards, in any direction), or in town, which, as far as I'm concerned is a half hour walk, or a taxi ride either way.
And considering the OP wants to be doing something based in the Trevithick building, he's not exactly going to be in a 'convenient' position for it. He (I am making gross assumptions) might want to sleep in some days, or not have to walk over a mile after a long day of lectures and practicals...?

But, in the end, it's down to the OP - I had this exact discussion today with a mate who left Taly to move back home, and we both agreed that you could get the same social scene in any flat, so long as you're willing to go to town or Cathays. I've never seen a social saying "We're meeting in TYB Social and then going on to..." - it's always "Meet in the Union" or "Meet in the Woody/Gassy's etc". Sure, I keep on about the walk, but unless you're actually planning on using the sporting facilities here, you're generally just put 'out of the way' - the only worse place I could imagine is Uni Hall...

Sure, this place was 'buzzing' with activity in Freshers' Fortnight, and everyone was out til stupid o clock, and for the first two months you could bump into someone new and be like "Hey! I've never met you before, but, how's about I get your number" (while being off-your-face-drunk), and after that initial 'buzz', everything seems to have clicked into cliques, with people amongst their own rarely interchangeable friend groups - I keep meeting new people through friends, flatmates and so on, but it's not the 'hype' I was expecting from Taly.

If you come here expecting illegal raves and amazing times and everyone to know everyone and there to be awesome nights in the Social, and you only having to say "Oceana?" to see everyone go "YEAH!" then you're in for a shock - some nights, you can say "Oceana?" and people will go "Sure." Others, you'll get blank looks and replies of "I have [essay/coursework/practical prep/revision] to do." The Social, despite being TYB's easy-access bar, is like a youth club, rather than anything compared to the Union - in Freshers' it was packed, but after that, I've rarely seen more than 20 people in there (excluding rugby days)...and as for the illegal raves...maybe I'm not cool enough to go to them...but up where I am, if people aren't out by, say, 9 or 10, it's dead for the night - no loud noise, nothing. The occasional chatter of drunks at 1am, but, it soothes you, like the hum of grasshoppers, rather than making a melancholy "I wish I'd gone out with them" feeling.

BUUUUUT - don't let me dissuade you all. I'm just a little man, in a little room, with a laptop and an opinion as valid as anyone else on this forum...

I know what you mean in that respect, the social scene isn't as high as is expected but it's still the biggest halls and out of that you can make more friends statistically heh, and the sports location was great as the sports halls and the football/hockey/rugby pitches were just outside and bute park was just down the road, you can make friends in those clubs. And the Talybont social pub, even though you might say it isn't all that wasn't that bad in my first year and friendships can be started in there with a beer in hand.

I didn't have any problems with the walk even though I was in the main building as I used to have to walk even further than that to college every day.

Yeh it's quite far from gassys etc and town but when you are drunk (we bought alcohol in tescos, drunk that in our flats and then went out) you don't care as much for the walk, it's more of a blur.
