Default I start IOT16 next week!
 
Hello all,

I'm starting IOT16 next Sunday and I am as fully prepared as I could be.

Just wondering if any current or ex-serving officers can give me any last minute pointers before I begin training...

... and now starts the search to find out who exactly you are. Don't be surprised if you see these posts again.

Only tip I can give is: Don't fight it. Some of it may seem pointless/unnecessary/only designed to make more work for you. Accept it, do it and move on to the next thing.

It's actually very good fun, for the most part, so do enjoy it. Seriously. All of it. And be nice to the aircrew, they're the most important people in the RAF and the whole reason your job exists, if you're a blunty.

Don't worry about guessing who they are - they WILL tell you. Especially those on IOT with you - especially the ex-UAS ones - because they DO know everything. Until they get chopped and come and visit you on a re-Branching visit.

The whole reason all our jobs exist is to place a platform where it is required - the aircrew just happen to be the trained monkeys who drive the platform. (insery smiley of choice)

I'm just waiting for security clearance and hopefully I'll be following you on 17.

[I'm ex-UAS [and ex-ATC] but I most certainly do not know everything!]

Yeah, but they needn't be the wingéd master race then - they can just be Nintendo geeks. ie, less of a chip on the shoulder "I've got perfect eyesight, I've never had asthma, I've never had hayfever, blah blah blah"

Thanks Jadius. Although I have been told by some people to get as much sleep as you can beforehand instead of getting used the early wake ups calls...

It doesn't matter - you will be tired and you will have to continue to function. You can't avoid it. Just get your admin sorted before you go - pack those bags and check what you have. Bit late for anything else.

definitely agree with that. Make sure you get into a good routine from the beginning. Aside from the first 2 weeks, I've only been up past midnight twice and only get up before 0645 on inspection days. Even then, I'm still never up before 0600.

Well I heard that in Term 1 there are inspections pretty much everyday so does that mean it will be earlier than 0600 starts?

It varies from squadron to squadron. We currently get atleast one a week, but stopped getting daily inspections after week 4. The time you get up on an inspection day is up to you. When I go to sleep my room is pretty much ready. So, I'm up at 0600 and at breakfast by 0615. I'm usually back in my room by 0630, which leaves 45 minutes to dust, vacuum and double check the block jobs. Everyone is different, but some people make it uneccessarily hard for themselves by getting up way to early.
