ils/elles s'appellent

This is correct.

We're all assuming the context is something like

Ils s'appellent Jules et Jim.

Not something like

They wait there until they are called:

Ils y restent jusqu'à ce qu'on les appelle! (or similar)

Does anyone want to explain how the word 'appelle' works??? its confuzing :s-smilie:
Well, the verb s'appeler=to be called in the sense of to be named X. Then theres the noun un appel, which just means a call. Then appeler which meas to call.

Is it the mechanics of the reflexive you find confusing?

There's a lot to be confused about in appeler... The present tense is odd for a start, because of the effect of shifting stress on the vowels and the resultant spelling:

appelle
appelles
appelle
appelons
appelez
appellent

jeter does this too.
