Default Cervical Smear Test at 19

Heya

I know that legislation has changed and now you won't be called for a smear test until 25 but I'm not sure whether I should book myself in anyway.

I've had a lot of rough sex as well as starting to be sexually active quite young (15) so I'm worried I'll be in danger of cervical cancer due to the damage I have potentially done to myself.

When I say rough sex I don't mean slightly rough - I mean regular very rough sex. I am not in any pain but I've heard that the "trauma" of rough sex can increase the risk of cancer.

I also am really scared of going for a smear. I've never had any doctor look down there before and despite my being quite a sexual person - I am in essence a prude :s

Cervical cancer is pretty much unheard of in women under 25.

I was going to post something like this. I'm 21, but I really really want a smear. Stories keep popping up about women who were diagnosed at my age. But two of my friends have tried to book smears and got refused cos they're under 25. =/

I'm in Scotland, and we get offered cervical smears from the age of 20. I don't think you are allowed to book a cervical smear before that though. Plus it's quite rare to get cervical cancer so young, which is why stories are popping up, it's so rare.

Thats what I'm confused about. You can have them in Wales and Scotland at20 but not England if it was so rare why haven't they abolished it there?

I just don't like the fact that I don't have an option to go for another 4 years. I am actually debating having my doctors in Wales (I live about 5 miles from the border lol)

Go for it - if your doc is in wales you won't have to pay for any of your prescriptions either.

I'm from Wales and go to uni in England......

If you actually showed signs of cervical cancer then a smear would probably be offered to you. Just because you are worried about being a higher risk doesn't mean you have it.

I suggest you look up on the NHS website the typical symptoms and signs of cervical cancer, and assess whether you may need one.

The best thing to do would be to talk to you your GP about it and see if they think you should have one.

I has a cervical smear done when i was 19, and it came back inconclusive.
The age of 25 is something to do with needing to be fully developed and because of that you're more at risk of cancer at a later age.
I'm sure if you had needed one doing, they would let you have one done. Usually if theres a risk of it happening in your family or if you have any pains ect.

I was offered one before I was called for one. I'd just turned 20 and live in Scotland so I'd have been called for one anyway. It was because I was bleeding after sex, which can be a symptom of cervical cancer.

Cervical cancer takes a very long time to develop though. Catching HPV is the main cause of cervical cancer so having more partners (especially having unprotected sex) is much more of a risk factor than having lots of rough sex with one person.

I have all symptoms for cervical cancer ( bleeding before and after sex, stomach pains and a horrible brown discharge), i also had my daughter at 16, i am 21 now. I have been checked for all STD's, even had a camera 'up' there but no smear.

So, request a smear. If they refuse, see another doctor. Unless, they've given you an alternative diagnosis? Or, the camera was actually looking for cancerous changes?

For the rest of you worrying. There are a tiny number of cases of cervical cancer in the under 25s each year. They don't offer smears under this age because the cervix is still developing and smears can bring back "abnormal" results, which require more invasive procedures to investigate. This is unnecessary as the "abnormal" reading is almost always a faulty reading due to the development of new, healthy cells.

Invasive procedures on the cervix/womb have proven to do more harm than good in women under 25.

There is no need for the age to be lowered.
