    TSR grade elitism: a rant
Induced by the comments in this thread

    TSR:

You may never have come across a person who is struggling to pass their A-levels. Indeed, you may never have come across a person who is struggling to get good grades, such as Cs. Now, I don't mind this, after all it's not your fault that you go to an incredibly good school/college, but I do mind your ignorance if you believe that such people don't exist.

A person starts a thread, upset about whether they're going to get 3 Ds. This is a perfectly legitimate concern; after all, achieving 3 Ds is what a pretty average person taking A-levels (bear in mind the less able people don't take A-levels in the first place) would expect to get.

Yet immediately, people start making comments, such as "troll", as if they were genuinely shocked that someone could possibly attain such "low" grades. The level of ignorance required to think in this manner is astounding.

A-levels are not easy. Sure, you might find them easy - I do, too - but other people are not you. Passing an A-level with an E grade is not a trivial task, and if you think otherwise then you're sadly mistaken.

At my college (which is by no means poor, but not good either), the majority of people are working at around grade C/D. The January results slips of my friends averaged CDD or something like that. These are decent grades. These people have worked hard to get them. They haven't got As or Bs, but that's because they aren't as academically able as you. They're proud of their grades, and rightly so.

I know some of you reading this won't be like the people I'm describing, and I'm pleased by that. But to anyone who read the thread and thought "god, the OPs thick" or "OMG you could get 3 Ds by just turning up to the exam", take your head out of your ******* arse and start living in the real world.

Why get bothered about it? Unfortunately there will always be a couple of people like that who think that you are thick unless you get a certain grade or don't own certain things but what are you going to do about it? You are just going to have to ignore them.

    Well said

I don't think you can change people's view as sleekchic said but fair play - what you said is certainly spot-on

In the end, what Uni you go to and ultimately what career path you take is far more important than what A levels you achieve. School grades are mostly meaningless crap.

Finally. In my college the majority of people got D's or less in their January exams and are proud of themselves and why shouldn't they be, at least they made the decision to go into higher education which shows they have the determination, why mock them for trying their best.

    Totally agree. +rep at midnight.

I didn't get A's at a level (far from it), but it didn't bother me until I joined TSR. Not everyone gets all A's, and i wish some people on this site would realise that.

While we're at it, can we kill the trend of putting grades into signatures?

Yeh theres a lot of stall set by A Levels here. In 10 years they won't matter a jot except for an insignifcant section on your CV.

OK, people may not have good grades at A-level, but why come on an academic forum?

So we should only allow those with "good grades" to come on an internet forum? What about those without "good grades" who need help from the forum?

    Well said.

I for one have noticed how stuck-up people on this forum can been.
... Couple of weeks back i remember someone saying on their profile how they failed their A Levels by getting BBC (WTF?!)

As well as that, its almost cringeworthy the way people 'wear' their A level results, and univesities applied to, on their sig. (comes up every bloody time they post a message!) Nearly always the people with A/B grades and who have applied to the top universities.

Yes, please do be proud if you have succeeded, however no need to show off. It is embarrasing; these same people wouldnt go around flashing their grades in real life, thats for sure. Grow up.
    i totally agree

Who said it's an academic forum? This is The Student Room. All you need to do is study, wherever and whenever you do it, whether you take evening classes at Birkbeck, you're doing a vocational course for the army, or you're a Cambridge medic.
