Default LCM Popular Music Theory syllabus?

Anyone done this and willing to offer a few opinions? Thinking about taking it up, not necessarily to do the exams, but should be interesting. I don't really feel I know enough about that side of music...any thoughts anyone?

woo! not many people use this sylabus

i did grade 6/7/8 with them after doing my grade 5 theory with the ABRSM

it's a really interesting sylabus in my opinion. i found it far more relevant to the music i listen to and enjoy playing than the ABRSM sylabus (as good as that still is)

i highly recommend it. They publish a book for each grade so it's a case of study book, take exam

i would say that i found it much easier after having took other theory based exams such as the AB one as well as gcse music

tis a good choice of study, have a look through the different grade books at your local music shop and decide to go for a slightly easier grade perhaps if this is your first theory exam

I did ABRSM grade 5 theory about 7 years ago and did GCSE music about 5 years ago - think I can remember most of the grade 5 theory (I seem to remember I always sucked at intervals...) but apart from that I should be OK. Probably got enough exams this semeseter as it is (Physics like putting on an extra 3 hour 'general physics' exam that's basically a synoptic paper, lol) but it'd be interesting stuff to learn no doubt.

ah yeah i just nosed at your public profile..that sounds like it would be a lotta work.

i study at the same uni as you but i do drama so i used a lot of the free time i had to do music exams and stuff (i didn't fancy doing extra curricular drama as i feel music is more of a calling in life for me at the mome so i spent my free study time doing music and now plan for a masters in it..fingers crossed as it's grade dependant )

Ah cool, some drama people one of my friends knows did a play about physicsy stuff not long ago, was meant to go - ended up missing it for some reason though heard it was pretty good though.

I got the grade 6 piano pieces yesterday (went on the hunt for the pop theory books, with no luck, but saw the grade 6 piano pieces so got those instead lol). They actually look sort of doable, which is relieving. As always though, I like more than one of the C pieces lol. I'm in no rush to do the exam though, I need to get scales up to scratch really, I think I just scraped the 14/21 on the last 2 exams I did lol) - besides I want to do grade 1 clarinet at some point as well lol. Oh and maybe learn a bit of physics Hopefully should have a lot of time over the summer to really get stuck into it though!

nice one

forsyths in manchester should be able to order you in a copy of the grade 6 theory book. i reckon theory is quicker to prepare for than practical too (luckily, the lcm exam season is after our unis exam season if thats any help )

if you enjoy popular more than classical (i'm just going on your theory choice) i highly recommend the AB jazz sylabus for clarinet...it rox!
