is nottingham university like being in a bubble (chlostrophobic and dead at weekends)
hi
i visited the university and absalutely loved it however i have the feeling that the novelty will wear off and it will start to feel like your in a bubble and not have the city life aspect that manchester university students will have??? -
Re: is nottingham university like being in a bubble (chlostrophobic!?)
Do you mean claustrophobic? And absolutely?
Nottingham has an amazing city that it shares with another university, so it'll be full of students. The nightlife is supposedly immense and there's an awful lot to do there. I reckon it'd be rather similar to studying at Manchester. -
Re: is nottingham university like being in a bubble (chlostrophobic!?)The city is a short bus-ride away. Literally. It's just 10 minutes away with buses constantly stopping by the campuses. It won't be that hard.(Original post by lyrical17)

I am considering renting a city flat next year, so that I have Notts as much as I like, as close as I like. First year is like a necessity to live on/near campus so that you get to know the place. But then, it's up to you.
But on the other hand, it's just 3 years (minus holidays and summer). It's not like you'll be stuck in a village thousand miles from civilization or something. Notts is great.
Don't worry

Re: is nottingham university like being in a bubble (chlostrophobic!?)
I'm a first year student at nottingham and take my word for it, i've not felt like i've been inside a campus bubble at all. Maybe a uni bubble, but thats normal im sure.
The city is a very short bus ride away, no more than 8-10mins £1.50 there and back. You'll find yourself going into town a lot. The nightlife here is great, lots of clubs, bars, pubs and resturants to choose from. On top of this you and your friends may find yourself going into town for some food and clothes, even in catered halls people do.
Its no bubble. -

Yep, one fifty each way and also you are close enough to townt hat you could walk it if you liked. I find that the campus as a whole is not like a bubble as geographically, it is not that small, and also the city is always accessible from the campus.

Re: is nottingham university like being in a bubble (chlostrophobic!?)
I'm not sure if this is exactly what you meant, but yeah there is a big 'bubble'. It's not that you're separated from the city, which isn't true at all, but most students go to student nights etc etc so that can be frustrating but you can break away from it quite easily if you want to.

Re: is nottingham university like being in a bubble (chlostrophobic!?)
Yes it does feel like you're in a bubble but its amazing for first year, everyone around you is a student and going through the same things as you.
But you experience that for one year, and then move into Lenton (probably) where most 2nd/3rd/4th years live which is much closer to the city centre and you're out of the bubble.
So at Notts you get to experience best of both! -
Re: is nottingham university like being in a bubble (chlostrophobic!?)Notice that as well - it is a little irritating sometimes that quite a few freshers want to all go to the same places (with not many of them appealing to me either!) , and not wanting to try something a bit outside the box so as to speak.(Original post by markdr)

But quite a lot of that depends on who you're with - you will meet a much wider variety of people at uni than at sixth form. -
Re: is nottingham university like being in a bubble (chlostrophobic!?)I'd agree with everything you've said there, yeah.(Original post by conroe-killed-the-k8-star)

Re: is nottingham university like being in a bubble (chlostrophobic and dead at weekends)
I don't know if most unis are quiet at the weekend, but Nottingham is quieter yes. I think part of this reason is that people do not really have any real need to leave their hall. There are no lectures/seminars/tutorials to go to and most just spend their weekends in hall. Some will got to the library, su shop, town etc.

Re: is nottingham university like being in a bubble (chlostrophobic and dead at weekends)Yes, it's dead at weekends because we're students, and we're all asleep or doing the work we didn't do during the week.
If you want to go to town, I could easily spend a whole day there with friends, and have done. If not, Wollaton Park is a short walk away, and Uni Park is fun to hang out in.
I have visited lots of my friends' unis at the weekend (Sheffield, Leeds, Manchester, Gloucester, Birmingham etc.) and yes, every single one is just as quiet on Weekends. It's only slightly weird, but welcome to real life where you can't do something really exciting every day. The bus/train/tram network here is extensive so getting to places won't be a problem, wherever you want to go. -
Re: is nottingham university like being in a bubble (chlostrophobic and dead at weekends)
It's "dead" (quiet compared to daytimes in the week) at weekends because the vast majority of the staff aren't there for work and the students aren't bothering to come into campus as there are no lectures. This really isn't a problem; if you're a fresher then your hall mates are still kicking about halls, and if you're not then your other mates are kicking around where they live. Come on, with 30,000 students it's not very likely that anywhere is going to be "dead" (completely devoid of other people), is it?

Re: is nottingham uni really dead on weekends? We're students, we're asleep.(Original post by priceless_beauty)
Hi
I was speaking to a family member thats at nottingham uni first year and he said that it is always quiet on weekends and its really wierd?
Where do people go on weekends, why is it quiet?
Are most unis quiet on weekends?
Yeah, like others have said. The academic staff won't be there, since they work on weekedays 9-5 like most jobs. Most of the students don't live on campus, so a lot of them will be at home as well. The students who live in halls will still be around, and the uni bar / shops will still have people milling around, on summer days people will be dotted around on the grass, playing footie etc.... really don't worry about it.
I've got a suggestion: go look around your school/college on a saturday. I guarantee you that nottuingham university at weekends is 1000 times busier than that.
