Well I need some clarification with these choices, as my 6th form have altered them.
My inital were Maths,Further maths, Physics, chemistry.
But they have told me that it is of no use studying maths and further maths because they both hold exactly the same content, and futher mathematics counts as 2 alevels if I intend to stick with it through A2.
I may want to do a mathematics degree, but will not having normal maths be a hindrence? I realy need to clarifiy this as it is worrying me...
So, is further mathematics 2 A levels? if studied through A2?
and is doing further mathematics, physics and chemistry good? are they still 4 A levels?
Re: Urgent- Am I allowed to do these A level choices?
Maths and further maths are separate courses, but maybe in your school choosing Further Maths automatically puts you on the Maths course as well. In which case, you'll be doing the four subjects you want.
Re: Urgent- Am I allowed to do these A level choices?
First off I'm not 100% sure as I'm only in year 11 too.
Anyway I believe Further Maths does indeed count as 2 A-Level subjects except if you're applying for competitive courses such as Medicine and Dentistry in which they only count it as 1.
If you do want to do Maths at university then yes having Further Maths will help a lot especially if you're looking to go onto one of the higher ranked universities. Further maths is something like 6 more modules and supposedly a lot harder (someone whose done FM can confirm this or not).
Finally yes doing Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry is good that counts as 4 A-levels.
Re: Urgent- Am I allowed to do these A level choices?
Maths is one A Level and further maths is another one. If you want to do a maths degree, you'll need further maths, as the topics learned are different.
Maths and further maths are counted as one for some courses though, such as medicine.
Re: Urgent- Am I allowed to do these A level choices?
You need maths too, I thought? Everyone at my college does maths & further maths as separate subjects and a friend of mine who went to Bristol to study maths did the same too.

Re: Urgent- Am I allowed to do these A level choices?
It depends on the unis and the course you apply for.
If you want to apply for medicine, unis would not care as much. But if you apply for economics () or maths then further maths would be a significant boost to your application.
Re: Urgent- Am I allowed to do these A level choices?
Further maths REQUIRES you to take a normal maths A level. I think what your teachers are trying to say is that "Further maths" as they understand it includes a normal maths A level. Really though, you do an A level in maths, and an A level in further maths.
EDIT: With regards to being useful, Further Maths is good for any course that actually uses high-level maths i.e. Maths, Physics, Economics, and some CompSci courses.
Re: Urgent- Am I allowed to do these A level choices?
If you're wanting to do a maths degree, then further maths is pretty much the way to go. You can't do f.maths without maths, so I guess what your school means is that you're automatically taking up two of your four A-levels by opting to do f.maths since maths is one A-level and further maths is another A-level. And the contents are definitely not the same. So, basically the same as everyone else have said...
Heh, I'm doing those exact same subjects as the ones you've mentioned. ;P
Re: Urgent- Am I allowed to do these A level choices?
Yeah, I want to do a mathematics degree at oxbridge, and I told them reapetedly that I need Maths and Further maths. I was interviewed by a english teacher soo....:P
But should I ring the 6th form up tommorow and tell them that that I need to take maths as well as further?
It's ridicuolus, I was actually going to just do 3 A levels thinking it was 4.
What should I say to the college?

hmm I see what you are saying, but she said that I am now taking; Futher mathematics, chemistry and physics. I was like WTF, thats only 3!!!
Re: Urgent- Am I allowed to do these A level choices?
Maths and further maths are two different subjects.
If you want to do mathematics at university, do them.
Physics is, without question, the next best A level for it (disregarding additional further maths which is rarely offered at colleges).
Chemistry is a popular 4th choice among prospective mathematics/physics students.
