Is Spotify messing up for anyone else? By messing up, I mean it "doesn't respond", you have to start it again, plays a song for a few seconds, repeat cycle.

I get this regularly. I put it down to sharing an internet connection with my brother, who is usually playing online games, as well as running Spotify. So I often can't use it properly. Though I think it is partly the Spotify servers too, with it still being in beta and all.
And yes you do need invites now.

Oh ****, my mistake re: invites.

It's a recent thing for me. In fact, it's been happening with a lot of my applications. Started with Winamp, though that's partially working now; Windows Live Messenger has the same problem, now Spotify. wut da ****

Quite likely a network or ISP problem then. Unfortunately that's the best diagnosis I can provide. Try making a thread in the Tech forum though, someone there might be able to help.

Only certain countries get it for free. OP seems to be from RSA.

Yeah, you can't get it in Vietnam. Still, wouldn't mind an invite to use when I get back to the UK.

Plus for now they've reverted back to invite only even for the UK (cos of the amount of people registering when the iPhone and Android apps were released).

Or have signed up before the beta was made public the first time, such as myself. I had 10 invites to use when I first signed up.
