    You're also lacking in efficient accommodation that you're more likely to find in a city - here there are lots of detached houses being let out, and relatively few flats/apartments. I expect that makes a difference.

    I guess there's a few flats in the centre of town, a lot of which are very expensive for what they are, and then the rest of the student lets tend to be houses (although I thought more semi-detached/terraced than detatched) like in the Lamond Drive area, around Cannongate, up by Morrisons etc

    It's not that there's no good accommodation, there's just less than elsewhere, I reckon. Places like Glasgow seem oozing with flats and houses more suitable for students.
