Hey guys,

Thought I'd start a threat for those who have accepted a place at Warwick and know that this is where they are going(not safety acceptance :-).

I'm gonna be studying for the MSc in Statistics next year and am well looking forward to it coz Nottingham is seriously getting boooorrinnnnnggggg!!!

Anyways, at least we might get to meet some of our fellow classmates on the forum and stuff!Let yourself go woohoo!

I know a couple of people doing at Warwick who will be doing this course next year, as well as many others who will doing many of the modules from the Msc but through the 4th year of MMORSE. Looks pretty good, not for the faint-hearted though! :p:

Are you planning on pursuing your studies with a PhD afterwards?

Why what did they do?
I thought about doing a Phd, but my goal is to get into working life as soon as possible because I'm more of a hands on kind a guy so would rather work. Plus my goal is to become a trader so unless I deem it very necessary to do one to further myself in the profession then I won't do it.

Hi,
do you know where I can find the detailed Math Msc's that Warwick offers ? I can't find better than this :
http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/courses/depts/maths/mathematics

but the problem is that they don't say if it's applied or pure maths and they don't give details of the modules you'll be studying ... I'm sure there is something like that on the website, I just can't find it
Thanks!

http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/sci/maths/postgrad/

And modules can be found here:
http://www.maths.warwick.ac.uk/pydc/mauve/mauve-index.html

The modules you can do are any with the code MA4xx, MA5xx and MA6xx. In some special cases, you can also do MA3xx modules.

EDIT: This may also be of interest http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/sci/maths/postgrad/current/pyhdc/

Hi Krush, Thanks a lot!
It seems to me that there aren't really specific Math MSc like : Pure Math MSc, Applied Maths MSc ... am I right ?

Also, do you know what is the difference between : "Mathematics MSc" and "Interdisciplinary Mathematics MSc" ? Is the second one a kind of applied and the first one pure?
http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/sci/maths/postgrad/current/pyhdc/msc/overview/

Thanks.

The Msc Mathematics is pretty much exactly like the fourth year of the MMath degree, the dissertation component may be a bit harder though. You get to choose from a wide range of modules. Most modules will be regarded as "pure" (very analysis based) but you can choose a fair few applied maths modules namely population dynamics, theoretical neuroscience, quantum mechanics and the likes.

The Interdisciplinary maths Msc is fairly similar but you'll have to choose modules from different department(s). Typically, students on the msc will go for modules in the physics department, economics department or business school. But there's an incrasing number who'll choose their modules from complexity scienc dept, biological science dept, scientific computing dept etc.
Basically the point of this Msc is to give you a good grounding in two or more subjects (including maths obviously) so that you can pursue an interdisciplinary PhD.

The department also takes part in other masters courses such as Msc Complexity Science, Msc Scientific Computing, Msc Mathematical Biology and some others.

Hi,
Thanks for your quick reply.
I think I understand now ...
using this website that you advised : http://www.maths.warwick.ac.uk/pydc/mauve/mauve-index.html
I could see all the modules MA4xx, MA5xx and MA6xx ... are there for Math MSc or The Interdisciplinary maths Msc ?
If am right : whatever your choice of module is you'll have a Maths MSc at the end and not like other unis : Pure Master or Applyed Master ...

I'm asking all these questions because I'm intersted on an Applyed Maths MSc so I'm not sure if it's the "Msc Mathematics" or the "Interdisciplinary maths Msc" which I need to apply to ...

Are you yourself studying a MSc in Warwick ?
Thx.

I wonder if any of you were given an offer on the basis of only one reference? I have applied but I'm waiting for one of my referees to get his act together, he's got the reference written but just needs to actually submit it online! It's infuriating. I heard that Warwick will consider the application with only one reference, does anyone have experience of this? (Obviously it would be conditional on the second reference).

Warwick is my first choice but until I find out what offers I get I can't start planning anything!

All the MA4xx, MA5xx ec modules are available for both the maths msc and the Interdisciplinary maths msc.

Yeah that's right, you'll end up with a Maths/Interdisciplinary Maths Msc in the end whatever your module choice.

To be fair both the Msc Maths and the Msc Interdiscplinary Maths are fine if you're interested in applied maths, I guess the latter would be more suited for you though.

I'm currently a maths undergraduate finalist at Warwick.

Not sure about this, I thought you always needed two reference to be considered. I've been through the same crap a few months ago, as one of my referees was taking a lot of time to send the reference. My advice to you is to constantly remind your referee (email/face-to-face/phone etc.) that he/she needs to send that reference! Good luck.

Cheers, I have spoken to him so many times it's unbelievable that he hasn't done it just to stop me knocking on his door. Hopefully when I ring up to check tomorrow he will have submitted them...
I have an offer for the MSc in Economics. But I think I'm heading to LSE come September.
hey!
okay so i am terribly confused between these two courses (have an offer for both). MA Industrial Relations and Managing Human Resources AND MA Management and Organizational Analysis.
I'm doing psychology for graduation, so want to do something sort of related to that..in the corporate sector.
But what is more important to me is the reputation of the course and the placements it receives.
Would anyone be able to help me make my decision?

If I was to get a 2.1 from say Leicester in economics would it be possible to get into Warwick for post grad?

Yeah definitely. Back up your application with a good statement of purpose/references and you should be fine.

Thanks for your advice, I assume that would be the 'perfect' breakthrough into Finance in London, such as IB right? As the masters is from a reputable University, does it matter that I will have Leicester on my CV?

Cheers

Warwick is a "target" university for investment banking so it will certainly be very helpful in securing a Front Office job (if that's what you are looking for). Networking oppurtunities on campus are also pretty good. For the vast majority (90%) of financial jobs out there Leicester, being a decent university, will not hinder your chances. Some very selective areas may or may not reject you in the screening process.

Aaah I appreciate that, would you class Loughborough as being better than Leicester ? (Times rank them higher, however Leicester has a way better reputation I thought)

Much appreciated with your comments so far!
