Re: Medics and Applicants Profiles - NO DISCUSSION
    I AM A SUCCESSFUL REAPPLICANT.

The majority of those that apply to medicine will receive 4 rejections (approximately between 55% - 65%). This profile is testament to the fact that it is always best to reapply after receiving 4 rejections the first time. Have a look at my 2010 entry profile and you will see that I received 4 rejections pre-interview. I brushed myself off, reapplied and am currently sitting here having had three interviews and have two, possibly three unconditional offers sitting on Track for me. What's more, I've had a year of my life just to myself where I've been able to do what I want, when I want. A gap year is a brilliant chill-out experience and I'd recommend it to anybody. If you want any (specific, not general) advice on applying to medicine or reapplying, feel free to PM me. Happy to help! I've also included some advice/hints in this post.

    Year of Entry: 2011

    Deferred?: No.

    GCSEs: A*A*A*A*A*A*AABB

AS Grades: AAAAA (Biology 91%, Chemistry 89%, Physics 89%, Psychology 100%, Gen. Studies 92%)

    Advice on AS Levels
    Choosing AS Levels

I would recommend choosing Chemistry and Biology, and then two other academic subjects. You do not need to do three sciences, nor do you need Maths. Do what you enjoy and what you're likely to achieve a high mark in - I loved Psychology and I did very well in it, if I had picked Maths, I might not have done so well.

    Studying for AS Levels

Take AS Levels seriously. Any work you do now will pay dividends when sitting your A2 - yes, A2 - exams. A mark at AS is equal to a mark at A2 but is significantly easier to achieve. Work, work, work - it's important. Do not spread yourself thin by studying for more than the standard four AS levels. I cannot drive home this point enough - your AS exams are very, very important and will save you a lot of stress when you're sitting your A2 exams. For example, when I was sitting my final chemistry A2 exam I was already guaranteed an A grade thanks to my AS exams, A2 coursework and January A2 exam - no pressure at all!

    A2 Results: A*AAA (Biology 94%, Chemistry 85%, Physics 85%, Gen. Studies 89%)

    Advice on A2 levels
Advice on which of your AS subjects to carry on

Carry on the three (no more - do not spread yourself thin as there is no additional benefit for studying more than the standard three) that you are best at. Ensure you carry through Chemistry and Biology, and then another academic subject. It does not matter that it isn't a science.

    Advice on A2 exams

A2 exams are hard. From 2010, the exams board introduced "stretch and challenge" questions into the majority of subjects, and these questions are incredibly difficult and are needed in order to achieve the A* grade. Do not get complacent - I burnt out before my final Chemistry A2 exam and missed out on an A* grade. Work hard for every exam and never underestimate how difficult they are.

    Overall AS/A2: A*AAAa

    UKCAT (if applicable): 705 (VR 720, QR 740, AR 650, DA 710)

    Advice on sitting the UKCAT

Advice on sitting/practicing for the UKCAT

I posted this in the 2011 entry UKCAT thread after sitting the UKCAT in September 2010. It gives an insight into the test, and how it compares to the gold standard in UKCAT practice - the 600Q UKCAT Practice Book. I also included the scores I achieved in the practice tests on the official UKCAT website as a benchmark. Please remember that sitting the test is completely different to doing practice questions at home, or using the official practice questions so you cannot directly correlate your scores between the two.

I finished VR, AR and DA with time to spare (3~ minutes ish). I finished VR because English is my strongpoint, AR early because there was a fair few I just couldn't get so I guessed (staring at it for an extra 3 minutes doesn't help!) and DA early because, again, it's one of my strongpoints because it is very English-y.

VR (720) - about the same difficulty/harder than 600Q. The length of sections are 3 paragraphs average. The shorter sections are usually more complicated, so it averages out. There are very, very little in the way of key words to pick out. I skimmed the passage, then answered the questions. But I am a fast reader, so ymmv.

QR (740) - much easier than 600Q (as has been said!) and much less information to digest before you can answer questions. As said, ratio and percentages come up a lot. My tactic was to do easy questions I could do, while guessing and flagging difficult/longer questions. I aimed to do 80% of the section (up to question 26) well and guess the remaining questions. I did this, but found a few questions after question 26 that were very easy - eg, I had to work out an average of 3 numbers and a % difference. I obviously did these.

AR (650) - a very difficult section. It's hard to compare to 600Q because it is a very personal thing if you can discern shapes or not. I'd say on the whole it is slightly easier, with some shapes (the ones I couldn't figure out!) being harder. A few were very simple (set A had 3 shapes, set B had 2 shapes) and a few I had no idea what was happening.

DA (710) - statements, on average, were longer than 600Q. The answers were also much more cryptic (eg. not as literal) and you had to deduce which, out of a couple similar ones, was correct.

Final thing I can say is that it is very important to be calm throughout the test. I had already done the UKCAT for 2010 entry (got 659) and because of this I knew what to expect and therefore were less stressed. If you can't do a question, guess and skip: this counts for any section. Also remember that easy/hard questions are scattered throughout the test. Don't spend ages on a hard question at the beginning and skip very very easy ones at the end!

PS. Here are my official practice test scores if they are any use:

    VR
    - Paper 1: 32/44
    - Paper 2: 29/44
    - Paper 3: 9/12

    DA:
    - Paper 1: didn't do this one
    - Paper 2: didn't do this one
    - Paper 3: 9/11

    AR:
    - Paper 1: 31/65
    - Paper 2: didn't do this one
    - Paper 3: 11/15

    QR:
    - Paper 1: didn't do this one
    - Paper 2: 13/36
    - Paper 3: 9/12
(Original post by Advice on UKCAT timings)
#1 tip for surviving the time pressure: Don't get stressed. Don't get flustered. I know this is easier said than done, but this is easily the difference between an average score and an exceptional score. You need to understand that it is impossible to answer every single question correctly (something that is contrary to what is drilled into you from year 6 SATS) so it's a very weird and unusual feeling (i.e. "oh my god I'm not going to finish so I'll fail") - and this feeling can make you flustered, which wastes time. You have something like 25-30 seconds per question so you really can't afford to waste time.

You need to get into the habit of answering ~80% of the questions half-well (if you see what I mean - compared to 100% questions very well), which is a culture shock, but I've found that it's the best way to get a high score. You need to develop the ability to glance over a question and see if you're going to able to read it, think about it, and then answer it all within 30 seconds. If you're not: flag, guess, skip, and come back to it later.

Another re-applicant here, never did I think that this would happen after receiving 4 rejections last year, but it just goes to show, as with most of the 2011 re-applicants, that an extra year can make all the difference

BSMS: Rejected (still to this day they have not given me a clear response as to why, having applied in 2 consecutive years I scored less on my second application than my first despite not having any work experience the first time round. I do not recommend applying here, their admissions policy is very strange!)

UCL - Biomed - Rejected due to academic score not being high enough apparently :eyeball:

Re: Medics and Applicants Profiles - NO DISCUSSION
Following on from what other re-applicants have said in this thread, I have to say that they are all completely right. Don't give up. If medicine is what you really want, apply tactfully, try your hardest to make your application the best that it can be and be yourself at interviews. If you get four rejections, remember that 60% of other applicants will too. Without wanting to sound cliched, you're not alone in this, and with the right determination, tactfulness, research and hard work you can get there. All I asked for at the start of the year was just one offer, and I never dreamed it would turn out this way. Just goes to show what a difference applying to the right places makes.

    Year of Entry:
    2011

    Deferred?: No

    GCSEs: 10.5 A*

    IB achieved grades:
    39 points overall
6, 6, 6 at HL (Chemistry, Biology, French)
7, 7, 6 at SL (English, History, Maths respectively)
1 core point (B in biology EE, C in TOK)

    UKCAT: 742.5 average (740, 760, 760, 710)

Work Experience/Volunteering: 2 days obstetrics, 2 days general medicine, 2 days orthopaedics, 2 months volunteering weekly at a hospice, 2 months as a weekly volunteer HCA

Extra Curricular: Senior Prefect, St John ambulance cadet, peer mentoring for 1.5 years, ran a craft club for year 7 for 1.5 years, piano, beginners guitar, job at a hotel, hiking/expeditions, watersports, RYA first aid course, helped run a holiday for Young Carers, won a national poetry competition

    Universities applied to and decisions:
Newcastle University - conditional offer based on proof of grades
Queen's University Belfast - unconditional offer
University of Sheffield - unconditional offer
University of Birmingham - conditional offer based on proof of grades

Biomedical Science at Newcastle University - withdrew, then received an offer via email

To anyone with 4 rejections, the main thing is to not give up hope. Try not to feel bitter and don't think of yourself as a failure, just try your best to think of it as a learning curve. Good luck if you are in this position

Re: Medics and Applicants Profiles - NO DISCUSSION
I've not posted this sooner as I wanted to make sure I'd included all the things I've done over the past few years. I'm a re-applicant after getting 4 rejections last year. I had a UKCAT of 638 then and a BMAT of 4.7 5.9 12. I got all my interviews and wasn't very good and Edinburgh rejected me I THINK because of the UKCAT.
I can't say my gap year's been incredible so far but as you can see it has been well worth it. You will know if you can do it and you should not give up if you get 4 rejections as you'll spend your whole life regretting not taking a gap year if medicine is really what you want. Isolate the problems that got you rejected and sort them out. Don't let it get you down. It's just how medicine applications go sometimes. Use the gap year to get a job, earn some money, realise how lucky you will be to be a doctor and savour the time to relax.
Never give up! Nothing that's worth having comes easily.
