Good question. I was wondering that the other day. Maybe Oxford take it more seriously? I'm not familiar with the rules - do they enter the same number of colleges? Have different selection criteria for students to be on the team?

As far as I know both are allowed to enter 5 college teams. In Cambridge, it seems that the respective college students' union organises the team selection, and this is followed by a university-internal tournament to decide which teams to send...

Apart from the fact that it's just a quiz show (so who the hell cares anyway), the actual quiz teams change every year, so I don't think you can actually speak of "Oxford" and "Cambridge" in this context. It should really be "a handful of quiz-nuts who all happen to be doing a degree at Oxford / Cambridge at the moment". I'd say it's just coincidence - plus maybe the fact that there are more colleges at Oxford, so the likelihood of one of them making it through to the end may be a bit higher.
Edit: Well, if the number of college teams is limited, the last bit doesn't apply, obviously.

Oh and it's probably because you have to be a very special kind of nerd to do well on the programme, and Oxford has proportionally more of these people, therefore making it easier to create a team of Super-Nerds who can win the whole thing.
