can anyone help me with this question as ive forgotton how to sketch curves when theres 2 co efficents of x, also how would i find the max and min of questions like these, are i only know when completing the square to find them

sketh the graph of y=x^3 + x^2 -8x + 12 indicating the values of x where the curve touches or crosses the x axis

Are you at GCSE or AS-level?

If you're at AS, differentiate the equation of the curve to get \frac{dy}{dx} and then solve the equation \frac{dy}{dx} = 0; this will give you the x-coordinates of the maxima and minima. To find the values of x where the curve touches the x-axis, you'll have to guess one root, then use the factor theorem.

If you're at GCSE, I think this question's a bit beyond your level.
