massive immigration waves starting from 1945 up to 1978/1979, mainly populations from Northern Africa. They came to France to work, which is what happened, but gradually, the next generations didn't give a damn about work, and the fact that they live in a very poor environment, encourages crime and violence.
Lots of gypsies in France, too; them and arabic and black immigrants hate each other, but they hate the pure blooded french people as well! so It's just one big social crisis really ^^

As others have said, it's mainly due to integration problems with immigrants. Immigrants are often segregated from French society and are often looked down on - even though second or third generations of immigrants are actually French! A lot of the problems are similar to those in this country, except I would say racism is a lot worse in France - particularly by the French police.

The vicious cycle created by the French government who invited many immigrants from north Africa over the years not expecting them to bring their families out and settle there. SO they segregrate them from society by putting the only affordable housing many many miles outside of cities so they can't integrate. Then the fact facist media such as Le Figaro have a huge following which showed in the 2002 elections when Le Front Nationale got to the final round of presidential voting and the fact they voted a president who openly said he hated immigrants. With so much discrimination= no jobs which leads to crime which then gives Le Figaro etc more ammo and so it continues.

paris is a classic beauty of a city, so the french don't want to house a million muslim africans there, who are poor and uneducated

There is a good film u could watch that helps "La Haine", deals with violence in Paris. Basically the violence stems from immigrants and mostly youths and teenagers.
