Re: Bangor Accommodation - MegathreadI'm a third year and don't live in halls anymore but I know a couple of people living in JMJ and it seems to be quite good. Obviously if you speak Welsh or are learning it that's a benfit, otherwise you'll have to be prepared to deal with feeling left out every now and then (which is not a bad thing as long as you're not culture-phobic or something). Only negative thing really is that you have to move out over the holidays imho. Hope that helps(Original post by nonniemorris)
Has anyone lived or is currently living in the JMJ halls? And could tell me what they're like?

Re: Bangor Accommodation - MegathreadJMJ has english speaking floors now as there were not enough students that wanted welsh speaking halls to fill the building(Original post by MagLatus)

Re: Bangor Accommodation - Megathread
Anyone want to know anything about Cefn y Coed just ask me. Had the time of my life in those halls, best of all i was put into the block with only one floor which meant no warden living in with us. I found this to be a problem with the newer halls, there's a chance you might have a warden living on your corridor, at least with the older blocks they have their own flat seperate from yours.

Re: Bangor Accommodation - MegathreadCefn y Coed is a little too expensive for me, do you have any other recommendations for any of the older blocks?(Original post by Petit chou)

Re: Bangor Accommodation - MegathreadAre you an international student? If you're international, you have to pay £300 when you apply, if not apparently you pay the £300 when you get your accommodation offer in August(Original post by vickyannex)
I sent my application off a couple weeks ago&had the email saying it had been acknowledged etc, but I haven't had the email asking for the deposit yet, has anyone else?

Re: Bangor Accommodation - MegathreadNo, I didn't realise it's guna take until August to sort it all out, thanks(Original post by madders94)

Re: Bangor Accommodation - MegathreadSorry for the late reply. Unfortunately i can't comment much on the older halls as i never really went into them, however i did once go into one of the halls in Normal site and i have to say i would NOT recommend at all, the kitchens have a smell to them which seems to be an ingrown stench you can't get rid of no matter how much febreeze you use. The rooms are quite large but not the nicest.(Original post by jay.henri)

However a good thing about Normal site from what i heard and saw is that, with how it's set, people become very close who live there and there's a very good atmosphere among everyone. The JCR is a lot more active in those halls than any other and the common rooms make it a lot more social as you get to know everyone, not just the people in your corridor. It's also right on the Menai Straits so a good chance of getting a room with a view. It's also well situated if you're doing a course where you have lectures in Menai Bridge, otherwise it is quite a walk to get to lectures, it's only around 15 minutes but after a night of drinking the chances are you'll be even more unlikely to go to lectures than those on Ffridd. I knew a few people who didn't turn up to many lectures because they couldn't be bothered with the walk.
Is Rathbone still open? Not sure if you can stay in Rathbone without being catered, but if you can it is well situated. A short walk to main arts and to most of the buildings in lower Bangor too. However i think Rathbone is only a catered accommodation so probably costs more than any other halls, and being catered means you get a very limited kitchen, and the kitchens aren't that amazingly fitted out in the self catered. This is just all assumptions though as i have never been in there other than for my post Graduation dinner, but having been to catered accommodation in other universities the kitchens house the bare minimum, one only had a microwave and a hob, which doesn't bode well for the weekend when you have to fend for yourself.
I hear Reichal has recently had a refurbishment so i imagine this will probably be the best option. It is in the student village (although at the furthest end) which means you get to feel the full university atmosphere, and be living close by to most of your course mates. This is always good as you can easily meet up and walk to lectures together, a lot of people meet outside the security building and walk down together which gives you more chance to get closer to your course mates which could be a necessity if you don't get along with the people you live with. My corridor had what we called "Honorary K Block Members" who basically spent most of their time in our corridor as they didn't get on with people in their corridor, so it's always good to make friends outside of the people you live with because it doesn't take much to have a big falling out with the people you live with; you'll soon find that washing up will be the bane of your university existence and friendships can be won and lost over an unwashed mug.
So overall i think Reichal would be the best option, however it all depends on what you're looking for. If you like water sports though Normal site is the place to be as you're right on the Menai and it's where clubs such as rowing, canoeing etc meet and house their gear.
Sorry i went on a bit, but i hope that helps.

Re: Bangor Accommodation - Megathread
Hi lads,
Im due to start my MA in september and I'm starting to stress about accommodation. I applied for Cefn y Coed as it seemed like the nicest place for postgraduates and I lived in an absolute kip of a place for my undergraduate in Ireland so I wanted somewhere half decent. Also think Halls would be the best way of meeting people.
Anyway, my point is, if I don't get placed in Halls, how difficult will it be for me to find a room in a good location? Like I'm chatting to one or two landlords now so do you guys think I should just go for a nice room before it gets snatched up on me, or wait to hear about Halls?
Im from Ireland so i'd have to make a trip over in the next few weeks to view rooms, this is a trip I really don't want to have to take as it will take a considerable chunk out of my budget! :/
Can't WAIT for September
