Getting around London.

Not sure if this should be in the travel forum or not but here goes.
I'm currently on a gap year and have just got a new job in central london. Today was my first day and i'd forgotten how much it costs to travel around London. I spoke to the ticket lady and she said the cheapest way to get around,(i.e. from zones 1-6) is to get a weekly travel card and put it on my oyster, apparently its like £45.

I am trying to convince myself she was talking rubbish, but have a sneaking suspicion she isn't. I was just wondering if anyone knew any cheaper methods of getting around between zones 1-6 on tubes, buses, trams and trains.
