Salters (A2 investigation- iodination of propanone) Initial rates- reacting excesses

When doing an experiment to work out the order of a reaction with respect to propanone, do you have to react the propanone with a much larger amount of acid? (I think the iodine is irrelevant as it is zero-order)

I'm fairly certain that this is the case, but no-one else in my class has done this. Assuming that it is true- whats a reasonable 'excess' of the other reagant- 10x the amount of the tested one?

Thanks

Hi there, I am also doing the same reaction for my investigation.

Yes the concentration of the other two reactants need to be in excess when varying the concentration of one of the variables. I suppose its the concentration that should be in excess i.e. if you are using a 0.02M conc of iodine, then the concentration of propanone and acid need to be about 2.0M.

Hope this helps!!!
