Ravensbourne or UCA Farnham? HELP

I'm currently in my final stage of a 1 year foundation diploma and have received conditional offers from both of these unis to study BA Hons Graphic Design, however i'm having trouble on deciding which one to choose as I have heard good and bad comments about both places. :s-smilie:

If anyone has an opinion on UCA Farnham or Ravensbourne please let me know!!

I'm interested in finding out about;

- Which is most successful in industry?
- Better place to live? Expenses/living in general
- Teaching quality/friendliness

HELP HELP HELP x
This will probably be biased as I do not know about uca farnham so can only tell you about Ravensbourne. It is excellentfor graphics, i went there for open day and had a leaflet on that department. One guy who graduated from there said in the leaflet that he did graphics for bbc and most people who worked in that department had been to ravensbourne. They also did some stuff for nickleodeon, or that might of been the animation department , but i think it was graphics. Ravensbournes place great emphasis on educating people for the industry so they have great work experiences placements (looking at where their students did placements i could not see a single company that i did not know) and also they have lots of people from big corporations come in to do talks and apparently they also come to recruit there as well.

In terms of the place, it should be cheap to live but not cheaper than uca (as that is proer Kent) as i live around tha kinda area at the moment and it is bromley which is practically london so still has kinda london prices on food and stuff but in terms of rent it is drastically different from London which is why lots of people are now relocating to bromley. One of my friends rents in this area for 400 a month, which is pretty good with rising rent prices. In terms of socal though, this is a downside there is NOTHING to do in the immediate area. (but this could help you work more, they have a very low drop out rate) The uni was at the end of one long road and the road was barren, just houses and then like a group of 4 shops on the other side of the road(one a cake shop though...nice cakes *dribbles abit*). I guess you could get a train, as there is a straight train to charing cross, waterloo east which takes about 30 minutes maximum to charing cross. These trains stop at aound 12.45 from charing cross if you are thinking of a night out. Also it is a bit hard to get accomodation on campus accomodation as the building is tinchy but even then you should have no problem renting in the immediate area and rent will be cheap.

In terms of teaching quality it is a bit hard to comment on as i did not get educated there. I will say that all the teachers we met on our open day were friendly and some of the most enthusiastic i have seen, they were eager to keep grabbing us and show what THEIR students were doing. We watched some broadcasting students and i loved the way the lecturer handled things, he was almost invisible which put the students at ease and gave them independance as if they were doing the job for real but yet he was observing them and when they had problems he offered a few words to help. Also the teacher to student ratio is apparently very good and they know the students quite well. What i liked was theres so much space in there, everyone in fashion had their own wokspace and graphics was very popular but they still looked as if they all had individual spaces. The have quite a few rooms with just 2 or 3 people working in.

I also forgot to add earlier that they have the most up to date machinery, computer programs and everything for all departments as they update constantly (every year they reasses) and apparntely its the standard to professional level that on getting a job you would recognise everything and probably even have worked on the exact same programme before etc.

Everyone was amazingly friendly as well and i am shy but was just chatting away to randomn people, when we were on the tour, people would stop and say hello and ask about us and what we wanted to study. All the tour guides were students and apparently they help look at portfolios and stuff as well. It was hard to get the tour done as everyone knew the tour guide and kept stopping to chat.

I really hoped that help, although i have to stress that is only my own assesent from reading my brochure and going on the open day (i was there for about 4 hours) and also i live near it. It would probably be best to ask someone about uca farnham though.

good luck with your choices you clever thing.

Wow thank you so much for so much information, really appreciate it  I think my decision is definitely swaying towards Ravensbourne, mainly because of the reputation, location and course quality, also the new building designs are impressive/exciting . But, i'm not sure if this is because I don't know a lot about UCA Farnham... :s-smilie: which would you say has a better reputation? Obviously in the industry I am going into reputation plays a big part.

Also, you say you live in Bromley? If this is correct, could you tell me about the area; costs, SAFETY.. and the general feel? I'm guessing if I choose Rave, Bromley will be a good student house renting spot?

If you don't mind me asking where and what are you studying? Do you know anyone at Rave who has an opinion on it at all?

Thank you again, helped a lot!

x
yes i do live in bromley, oh yes, it is true that what we are talking about does not really matter as they are moving to greenwich next year. At the open day they talked about courses that will be moving there and your one definitely is. I think accomodation might be moving there too but i am not sure, i might check for you later. Also they mentioned the students and staff will be getting free/ discounted tickets to o2 arena which just souded great, all the students were getting excited bout micheal jackson apparently.

Bromley is still a bit city style in some places as you get dodgy looking types, in my area which is closer to london you get the usual london things though nothing dangerous (crowds of kids, a bit of late night noise on the road with people, chicken and chip shop lines/ fights) but with Rave i would say it is more like proper kent, honestly it is soooo quiet.

I am on a gap year at the moment so i am not studying much, except eastenders and a bit of Hells kitchen but was applying for foundation this year which is why i went along. Well the girl from rave who gave our open day, i was talking to her a while after the open day finished and she told me a lot abot her course/ the university from a personal point of view(you know the stuff you are not meant to say in the open day!). She was studying fashion pathway in foundation though but yet she had nothing but good things to say. (they do pay them for doing the open day though lol) She was just in love, it was clear to see. She said she was going to do degree there, and that the teachers were AMAZING. She said they really support you and help, that compared to other colleges where you have to ask teacher for help in raves its different in that the teacher can see you are struggling and will offer help but non patronisingly. She also did say (and this might seem a bit negative) that their main areas are fashion and broadcasting though everything else is excellent as well but theses are their amazing areas. Oh and she said the student life is amazing, if you live far at first you may feel you don't fit in but by the end of foundation year everyone knows each other and that a lot of people say they have made the best friends of their lifes there. She was talking about student union and things, they do like this 'bubble night' in the student union room where they soak you with bubbles and everyone kinda jumps in which was pretty randomn. They seem to have lots of fun though.

always glad to help, it is an important 3 years of your life that will probably have a great effect on your career so goodluck with choosing but imho i think both are really very good. I honestly would not like to say which onei think is better for graphics as i know nothing about farnham so would not be fair on them. I would have to say that UCA farnham eems excellent for other things related to art and design though.

best wishes.xx

UCA FARNHAM!!!!!

:woo:

Hey!

I go to Farnham, and I'm doing the Graphic Communication degree!
It's amazing here, I absolutely love it!
UCA have a really really good reputation in general; we tend to breed Oscar winners! haha

Our course has a very good reputation in industry, and 99.9% of people off our course graduate with a job waiting for them!! Its wicked!
With regards to the course, its one of a kind in the sense that we have 4 pathways that you choose in your second year. This really helps to get you ahead in industry as companies see hundreds of thousands of students every year, and every course n so similar in structure; everybody's portfolios always look the same. But with our course you know where to specialise in the industry and we also have loads of work experience opportunities (even in first year) so when you graduate you are really confident in where you lie in industry.
The tutors are awesome, you should come to an open day and meet them because they are so cool. We also have a real range of tutors, and they all specialise in their own subject area, i.e. print design, branding and packaging and web design etc. Every single one of them are still in industry and all have awesome contacts.
Structure of the course: we are in 3-4 days a week. Monday is CTX- a day where we have lectures and tutorials; we have to write one essay a term. And they aren't too hard so don't panic. Tuesday and Thursday are studio and workshop days, they are the main days and we have to be in! Friday afternoons at the moment are wicked- they get in graphic designers and illustrators and web designers and basically anyone to come in and talk about their work. This isn't compulsory but its fab for inspiration.
The project we are doing t the moment is an illustration based one (but not traditional drawing, it can be anything from photography to type based illustration) and next week we are meeting loads of different designers who are going to teach us all about their trade, like photography and mac based illustration and stuff. It's pretty cool.

I don't live on campus I commute from Guildford, but my friends live on campus. The rooms are quite small but tidy and big enough for people to live in! You get a single bed and a desk and a wardrobe and a sink (and moving space of course!). The rent is very cheap for uni rent (bills included) and the Farnham area is really nice.

The SU isn't the biggest SU in the world, but the nights out are wicked! We've had some cool acts play here, i.e. Booty Luv and We are Scientists etc. And the drinks are VERY cheap (woop!)

The library is amazing too, we have really cool stuff in it and you can rent dvd's and videos for free too. We also have connections to all other campuses so if your looking for a book that's not on our campus we can have it sent from another campus.

If you have any other questions give me a shout!!

How good are your industry links? Say, if you compare how good industry links are at CSM or Ravensbourne?
Also, obviously Farnham isn't in London, so would you say this makes it more difficult finding work experience as you are not 'on the doorstep' of design companies etc?

How much tutor contact do you get?
Do the tutors treat everybody equally?
What contact names/companies are they in touch with?

How easy/fast is it to commute from Guildford to Farnham etc? I'm just worried about the fact that there literally isn't a lot to do in Farnham, so do you spend a lot of time in Guildford to shop, party, have fun?

The SU isn't the biggest SU in the world, but the nights out are wicked! We've had some cool acts play here, i.e. Booty Luv and We are Scientists etc. And the drinks are VERY cheap (woop!)

Please tell me about nightlife, as heard a few negative comments regarding this at Farnham, is it completly and utterly BORING? Do you go out in Guildford?
Do you ever spend nights out in London? Or, do you commute to London a lot to shop/spend time etc?
And how expensive is all of this?

Kerry come to farnham! ill be doing the graphic communication course! lol
Hiya!

I'm going to Farnham UCA this Sept; I've never even visited Ravensbourne so take that into account when reviewing my comment! I can only comment on the general atmosphere at Farnham, student campus and nightlife as I have friends who go to this Uni so I have been there a good number of times. I've not had experience as a student there yet but I can tell you what my friends who study there think.

Many people in Farnham come across and friendly and warm however I have encountered strange, slightly eccentric, uppity / snobbish types which feels a little off-putting around the village, but the diversity of the students at the Uni ensures you are surrounded by people who would make amazing friends. I haven't met one person at Farnham who I didn't like. Walking around the village, Farnham largely does seem like a place for elderly people; the nightlife is flat and boring, but for some people, that is only a good thing. Not everyone likes more extreme or roudy nightlife and prefer something much less lively and settled. There has always, always been sufficient excitement for me at the SU. There is no air of intimidation, and I generally feel safer there than going to a nightclub in a more "lively" area. Many sensitive, romantic types will love being at Farnham; located between the Uni / campus and Farnham rail station is a sweet park with swings / slides; a gorgeous lake with a charming bridge makes it a great place to chill out with friends or soak up some inspiration.

The rooms (at least, those I have seen in student accommodation in the Student Village) are tiny, with off-white painted brick walls - they can't be described at particularly visually inviting, but they're practical and you can always beautify the rooms with images and whatnot. I definitely think it is the company which makes Farnham, it just feels relaxed and comfortable. I feel completely at liberty to be myself at Farnham which is a quality I don't feel at many places!

My friends at Farnham mostly study Film Production - my closest friend who works has found the course tough, as to be a director required massive amounts of confidence and inner-strength he didn't previously have, but I can't tell you how much it has helped his confidence. A year after studying there and he seems like a different person with masses of independence; the same goes for my other friends there. I have known of a few people who have either complained about the poor standard of a photography course, or dropped out of taking photography at Farnham altogether, so I wouldn't reccommed Farnham if you want to take photography.

I hope this helped a little! Good luck in choosing! x
