Well it does help if you know what the words mean, yes.
Also, simply explaining/defining WHAT the word at hand is at the start of the question gets you a mark or two (in edexcel anyway).
It helps in the first few units, to grab easy marks,But by A2 as long as you show the examiner your have the basic idea behind a concept you should be fine. Expressing knowledgeble views counts for much much more then...

You get marks for definitions, so i kinda do. especially for unit 1 as the supported choice, definitions really helps
Look at past mark schemes. As there is no one agreed definition of terms you tend to get a list of accepted definitions. State and be brief. Lots of marks to earn elsewhere :-)

Pretty much I think, theres key phrases they look for so just learning them word for word is the best way to do it
