Does anyone have any tips for how this letter should be written?

Something like:

--
UCAS Number: xxxxxxxxxx

Dear Sir/Madam (or Admissions Tutor, if it was on the offer letter),

I have been offered a place to study [English, Course Code] at York in October 2009. However, I would like to defer my place until 2010 [to...].

Please could you confirm in writing if you are able to offer me a place on this course next year? In the mean time, please feel free to contact me on [email/phone], if you have any questions.

Yours sincerely,
--

I think you'll be fine (as in, they'll probably still give you a place), even if you don't give a reason. (You'll just have to format it so it looks a little more than two sentences :frown:)

Have fun on your year out, and maybe I'll see you there next year.
