York student life

I have an offer from York to study English, it's a course with a good reputation and on academic merit I see no reason why I shouldn't make this my firm choice. However, the city itself has a reputation as being peaceful and picturesque and, whilst I definitely appreciate these factors in any location I find myself in, I can't shake the feeling that this means a university experience which isn't quite as vibrant as with other cities. Help from anyone with experience of the University or the, city through their views on the city itself in terms of nightlife, atmosphere, activities etc., would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.
