I thought it was a general science foundation year for science. Actual title being BSc science with foundation year. After first year you can transfer to a different speciality or stay on that degree course. Up to Chrismtas you do Chem, Phys, Bio and Maths. 2 lectures and a seminar a weekfor each and lab work for the 3 sciences. One subject is dropped and the other 3 continued afterwards (unless you are aiming for medicine or nursing, in which case some health options can be taken). Pass mark to continue is 40% in each module. If you want to change to maths or pharmacy or medicine (for example), much higher marks are required in specific subjects. i.e to switch to maths, you need 70% in maths and must be in the top group. This is decided by a test in freshers week. Medicine needs an average or 80%.
This is from memory as I am on holiday and don`t have my handbook, but hope you find it helpful.
hey suffolkb, im doing this course this year quick question: what level of maths knowledge is required for the test? im beginning to think i should have been swotting up haha. thanks.

    Hi,
From memory, the test starts off with simple stuff on brackets, fractions etc ang gets harder as you progress.
There are 4 classes that you could be put into.
CHE-0M33 is for those who do not have a recent GCSE
CHE-0M35 is for those with GCSE grade c or below, or was taken some time ago.
CHE-0M37 as above but for those with a higher grade or more recent study.
Do well on the test and you do MTH-0B91 which is to bring you up to A level standard. Includes trig, complex numbers, vectors and calculus.
This is not a hard-and-fast thing. Your test score will decide your group.
One of us had a maths O level (shows his age) and was put into the highest group due to his test score.
    The test is multiple choice.
You can drop maths at Christmas. One of Chem,Phys,Bio or maths has to go.
    Good luck with the test.

I'm still waiting for a reply from UEA but very interested in going there. I am also applying for the science foundation year and want to go on to Maths afterwards.

Are those of you who've started still around here?

Yes, still here and doing the Natural Science course. Really enjoying it, especially as I get to chose my own modules (within reason). I have chosen modules in maths and geophysics.
If you want to transfer to straight maths, you will need to be in the top group and get 70% in both foundation maths courses. 80% for MMath. The marks needed to transfer to other subjects can be found in the science foundation year handbook - pages 17 on.
    Good luck.

I'm 23, Matureb, do you get looked upon as being the 'old weird' one?

I probably did as I am a lot older than the others on my course. Not so bad now though. Living in halls is strange, but there are 4 of us - all mature students - on our floor.

Wow! If you people think your mid 20's is old, then I must be ancient. I'm--wait let me count--ahh yes, I'm 33 and will be at UEA (walker in hand apparently) in September to start a Masters program.

I just got an unconditional offer! Now, have to decide between them and Newcastle, I hope they invite me to a visit day.

Looks like I will have my work cut out for me then if I come here as I'd very much like to do MMath. Glad you're enjoying your course still.

    Hi Stainboy.
Visit days are normally Weds. You can get Megabus from Sheffield to Norwich for £1 each way, and a room at the central travelodge is £19 - sleeps up to 4. I picked Apl 13/14 at random here.
If you don`t get an invite from the school, I`d be happy to show you around.

I'm pretty sure I'd like to go to UEA now, it has a lot of benefits for me over Newcastle. I had a look on the site and the next and last visit day for maths is a month away. I'd like to go to it but I may make my own way to Norwich for a look around beforehand. Might combine it with visiting home in Essex at Easter.

Evening all. Well I'm extra-mature at 37 Got an unconditional offer for International Development which I've accepted with a firm handshake, starting in September.

I live in Suffolk at the moment but will move to Norwich in the next couple of months. Not sure where yet - I've reserved a place in the Village but maybe something else will come up.

Nice place, Norwich. I did an HND there as a regular flavour mature student aged 26. Been working as a freelance writer in the travel industry since then, but decided to get back into aid work, which I was doing in Zimbabwe back in the 1990s.

Anyway, looking forward to it. It's going to be a blast
