Default Law Work Experience

Hey,

Basically i'm interested in studying law at university - yes i already know about the workload, pressure and competitiveness of studying law at University however i still want to give it a shot.

I'm 16 and i'm doing GCSE's then A-Levels and then Uni. I've been told by a current law student to try get some work experience in the holidays in a courthouse or soliciting firm, so that's what i've done.

Basically i need to write a letter about why i want to do this etc, any tips/advice on what to write and how to do it.

Also could anyone give me any tips/advice on how to get more knowledge on law before actually going to uni and study it - books, websites etc.

Thanks.

Default Re: Law Work Experience

Hello.

I'm a Scots law student, going in to my fourth and final year.

From my own experience, not many first year law students will have any exposure to the legal profession on entering their studies. And I do not think that it is expected by universities. However, by gaining some experience at least you can use your exposure to justify your desire to study the law. I must commend your enthusiasm.

Try writing to smaller high street firms, chambers etc. I know that the public prosecutor in Scotland is very helpful at arranging work experience - I don't know whether it's the same in England.

As for applications:
Make a CV, listing your details, school grades, achievements, sports, other work experience etc. Also draft a short covering letter, just setting out who you are, what you are currently doing and that you would like to undertake some work experience with a view to possibly studying law later on.

For more information, have a look at thelawyer.com, targetjobs, etc

Best of luck!
