AAAaa is 570 points, def enough to do BESS! I'm in same position looking to go back to Ireland for uni but i find that the A levels are weighted quite unfairly against the leaving cert!

Oh yeah sorry about that! Again highlighting how unfair it is!
do ya know the last year cut off points for BESS then?
I've just realised that Trinity do a brilliant course for my interests. Does anyone know if it is too late to apply for 2009 entry? And if so, if there's any way to apply post-deadline? Like a UK clearing equivilant?
Thanks.

why is it unfair??
Are you saying that the maximum points that will be counted from a levels is 510, regardless of if, for example you had 570 points? If so , can a person with a levels ever get accepted for a popular course where the offers go to those with more than 510 points?

because AAAaa is an exceptional a level score, and they only credit it with 510 points out of a possible 600! Meaning if you wanted to take medicine for example you wouldn't be able to get onto the course, you'd be a long way off!

Yes, but because TCD counts A-level A grades as equivalent to 150 points, 4 full A-level A grades would be required for the maximum 600 points.

From Leaving Cert grades, 6 higher level A1 grades would be required for that same 600 points score.

Well yes but if you take 4A levels you can get 600 points and get into medicine; whereas OP is doing 3A levels and 2AS; so its not possible for him to get 600 points. But really for medicine in trinity anyways, AAAaa is not that exceptional, it would just be exactly the same if not worse than everyone else, as TCD's cutoff point for medicine was 590 points last year, meaning you need at least AAAA to get in. Having said that, the score required for international students is much lower, i know a few with AAB are in the course.

No the maximum points that can be counted from A levels is 600 points, for example medicine requires 590 points and it is quite possible to get in with 4 A levels

so what about BESS its 470 to get in does that mean AABaa?

So for A level applicants they may accept lower? Is this on all courses?

no not for A level applicants, but for foreign students paying foreign fees. If you are from Britain you will be expected to have the exact same grades as everyone else, as you'll be treated as a local student; whereas those people i was referring to is from Malaysia, although having done the A levels they are still classed as foreign, so they get to have lower requirements.
