A2 Edexcel B Geography Issues Analysis: Conflict in the CairngormsPLEASE READ THIS POST
It has some useful links in it, as well as a link to the resource for those that cannot get it it. It is not just an introductory post
Hello!
So, the pre-release came out today for the Synoptic paper of Edexcel B, and it's about Conflict in the Cairngorms.
The file is now available for download at Edexcel:
Edexcel Resource Here!
Map Insert
Anyway, I just thought it would be beneficial to create a thread where everyone can share their ideas
So feel free to post tips for the exam, your ideas on the issues, synoptic links, mock exam questions/answers, documents/news articles that could be of use and anything else you want to add, as well as ask any questions ^^
I'll be editing this post with any links or files so they're easy to access without browsing through (hopefully) a lot of pages
However, although the links will be listed, it is still worth looking through the forum, because there are often a lot of questions asked etc. I will note any really useful replies though, or frequently asked questions
There are a few posts later on down the page that regard writing on the original copy. We have been warned NOT to do this. If you have to question whether or not you should write on it, it's surely just easier not to write on it at all, but get a photocopy and scribble on it 'til your heart is content
Some Useful Links
Exam/Preparation Tips
Geogger's Useful Hints
Key Definitions
List of Key Terms to Learn - some of these have been defined in the above post.
Geofactsheet - this is mentioned in the booklet as a resource to read
Documents/Mock Questions
Geogger's Mock Paper
Geogger's Conflict Matrix and Synoptic Web Diagram
Mock Questions - there isn't a brief, but it could definitely be useful to try and answer the questions anyway
More Mock Questions - same as above ^^
Sites to Definitely Look At
Formation of Tors - this can be used for the Geodiversity section, as apparently it is important to look at the formation of tors.
Everything about the Cairngorms - this website looks fantastic. In Part 1, it has an outline of the Cairngorms and if you scroll down, a section on Land Use Threats and Conflicts, as well as the future. Definitely go to this site!
Parallel Case Study: Scandinavia - Deforestation in Boreal Forests - for those of you who don't know the case study from Biomes, this website has a lot of information that could be useful in showing a parallel case study for degradation of forests.
The Nevis Range: Awards - this could be a useful bit of info in considering the proposals in Section B
Sites Worth Visiting
Cairngorms 2030 Park Plan - it's worth skim-reading for little bits of relevant info
Conflicts in the Cairngorms - this has a few links that are worth looking through, especially with some viewpoints.
The Cairngorms Campaign - this has links down the side that are worth a read...there is a lot about past conflict there, with the Funicular Railway, and why the Cairngorms is so important e.g. confict between conservationists and developers.
Housing/Development in the Cairngorms - it's got quite a bit of info, but a table at the end for housing recommendations that could help reduce conflict.
Deer Management - this talks more about problems with deer in the Cairngorms, and the current management plan.
Tourism in the Cairngorms - looks like it could be really useful to show the types of tourism, and conflict that this tourism causesGeneral Issues with Second Homes - this is just about general conflicts with second homes in Scotland, not specific to Cairngorms, but perhaps worth a read all the same
Threats to Woodland - this gives some threats to the Caledonian forest, and mainly discusses climate change and commercial forestry
More Threats to Woodland - from the same site as above, but has more threats to consider.
The Caledonian Pine Forest - quite a lot of info about the Caledonian Pine Forests in Scotland
Highland Real Nappy Project
News Articles
Building Ban on Second Homes in the Cairngorms - this could be useful when considering the number of young dependents/economically active moving out, primarily as a result of second homes etc.
Expansion of the Park Boundaries - this is basically a news article discussing the expansion of the national park, as well as some bits of information about the park.
New Articles Regarding the Cairngorms - it may not really be relevant, but there could be something in there if you want a lookLast edited by Untitled1; 29-05-2009 at 07:38. -
Re: A2 Edexcel B Geography Issues Analysis: Conflict in the Cairngorms
The fact that I got to do the synoptic again..just annoys me.Galapogos was a nice one but I messed it up...brilliant.Anyway my thoughts well when I went to the conference Sue Warn said this material would be okay it isn't too hard.As we get a choice. She insited on doing a conflict matrix between the major players ..so I think i'll do that. She also said that we should look out for options to evaluate .Look at cost v benefit,adv/disadvantages and environmental, social and economic impacts.aND SYNOPTICITY LINKING AS CONCEPTS WITH A2 CONCEPTS.

Re: A2 Edexcel B Geography Issues Analysis: Conflict in the Cairngorms
I've had a quick flick through the resource. It looks like a lot of text more than diagrams this year (we've done a mock before, and it wasn't as much text as this!), but I bet with a good look into it, it probably won't be that bad.
As I say, I've only flicked through, but possible case studies to link for synopticity could be the Lake District (with tourism/second homes etc. - the second homes bit could be linked to the fact that there is a decline/out-migration of youths due to the fact that they can't afford the housing), Cornwall (potentially if they're experiencing rural deprivation/are reliant on tourism) and maybe erosion on Kinder Scout (there was a lot of peat erosion, so they had to implement a few ideas to stop this erosion).
There is also a climate graph in there, so that could link to what we've learnt in Unit 4 with Weather and Climate, and it looks like biomes/conversation of areas could definately be linked too.
I'm going to look over it during the weekend, and get some ideas hopefully! -

Yeah, 90% of the stuff in that book is pointless. Well, it was for me when I did the Galapagos synoptic anyway.
Tell me about it, doing tables, and conflict matrixes in exams - pushed for time as it is. How did you do in Galapagos? -

Re: A2 Edexcel B Geography Issues Analysis: Conflict in the CairngormsJust a tip - the secure download on the edexcel website is only for the map, they have deliberately not given us the whole paper to download as they dont want us to have a copy to annotate. I dont think they have ever heard of the term photocopying.. but hey ho..(Original post by Untitled1)
Hello!

I can't seem to post a link to the file just yet, since it's Secure Download, but hopefully I will be able to soon.
Anyway, I just thought it would be beneficial to create a thread where everyone can share their ideas

It would be really good if someone could sticky this, like the Cumbria one was, for easier access?
I'll be editing this post with any links or files so they're easy to access without browsing through (hopefully) a lot of page

Re: A2 Edexcel B Geography Issues Analysis: Conflict in the CairngormsWould you like me to put my hints sheet on here?
I did it for the Cumbria one but I will look at it over the weekend and amend bits.
I'll try and get it stickied.
