I've heard really bad reviews of Stockton

Welcome to the University of Durham forum: where prospective and current students can discuss everything from the differences between colleges to the nightlife, an abundance of Rahs to the Stockton campus.

Is the Queen's Campus in Thornaby cos I've heard Thornaby is quite a rough area is offically one of the poorest areas in Britain. I've heard it being reffered to as ''Thornabronx''

Can someone correct me if i'm wrong.

It's in Stockton isn't it?? Or is Thornaby part of Stockton....
Yes Thornaby is part of Stockton.. at least thats how I think of it.

That offer of a campus tour is still open by the way (if you want to take it!)

Oh, thats great. I have quite a few! Sorry!
    1) I want to go somewhere with quite a lot of people, did Stockton have a lot of people in it or is it quite a quiet and isolated place?
    2) Because its a campus, are there facilities such as Cinemas, restaurants etc inside of Stockton?
    3) Is there a friendly atmosphere?
    4) Is Stockton quite large or generally small? If so, could you possibly say how small?
    5) Is the accomodation good?

Sorry, so many questions! I think I might check it out soon too!
hey fairygirl, im going to st.marys in durham, but i actually live in Stockton at the moment - its my home town. dont believe the reviews - every town has its fair share of scruffs/vandals/undesirables/smackheads anyway, and the campus is actually situated by the river in a nice location next to watersports centre, barrage, offices and stuff - so you won't really be in the town centre as such. In fact calling it Stockton campus is misleading, its between Stockton and Middlesbrough, (Boro has a population of about 400,000 so there will be people there to meet, as well as the Uni of Teesside which is in the town). Boro has lots of nightlife - student night every thursday - and actually i can honestly say that its got a hell of a lot more nightlife/activity/crack than durham does, only its not student-dominated.

as for cinemas and restaurants, you'll only be about a mile from teesside park, one of those out-of-town multiplex cinemas/bowling alley/fast food mecca kinda places - and theres ARC cinema in town centre which shows some random foreign films as well as theatre/dance etc etc...arty farty stuff.

btw the north's biggest nightclub - Club M - is only about 5 miles from your campus. Don't worry about what you've heard, Stockton's alrigh', innit! The people are friendly (I'm friendly, right?), really friendly actually. Stockton town centre itself does have plenty of pound shops/charity shops etc - but as i already said, you might never actually need to go there.

sorry i cant fill u in on the accommodation, i've never stayed in it - its modern thats all i know, and v close to railway station. good luck, im sure you'll be pleasantly surprised.

thornaby is **** and rough so yeah ur right - you'll never go there anyway. thornaby is the part of stockton that's on the south side of the river - you're nowhere near thornaby's ****ty bits - the only reason you're in "Thornaby" is cos you're on a nice pretty riverside development which happens to be on the south side so u hav thornaby postal address - but yeah as a rule steer clear of thornaby itself!

    Thanks Duck,
Accommodation is very good.. rooms are big enough but the best part is the ensuite bathroom for EVERY student here.
Every 6 rooms has a large kitchen to share too!
The walk to the lecture buildings is a maximum 10 min walk, to town is about 10 mins and the nearest shop is about 2 mins away.
There is a cinema, restaurants, bowling alley about 10 mins taxi (£4) away.

    Plenty of stuff to do!

I thought we had a population of 125,000?

Got to agree there - Boro is also the place for clothes in the North East. The Psyche shop was recently named the best clothes retailer in the country by FHM

ARC has just gone out of business, sadly
Aye, Stockton Campus isn't so bad. Stockton and Thornaby themselves on the other hand...

BTW I've never heard Thornaby called Thornabronx before, but there is an area of it called the Bronx where people get stabbed and raped and stuff. Basically, if you're in Thornaby centre, the generally accepted rule is 'rape or be raped; stab or be stabbed'.

But you'll never go anywhere near Thornaby centre anyway, so don't worry yourself. You will hear loads of stuff about Thornaby and Stockton being the most deprived areas of the country and to an extent they're true, but just to reiterate, you don't actually need to go anywhere near the centre of them.

Goodness me, i'm glad that i didn't decide to go to Stockton, it sounds dangerous and scary!

Im going to Stockton in October, having looked round it 3times..and I didn't feel threatened once. I also found all the local people freindly and informative.

The main decision why I rejected Manchester Uni was due to the intimidating atmosphere, on our visit day we were harrassed by a tramp, and saw a group of hooded youths breaking into a car..and in general the place had an air of crime to it.

I thought Stockton looked ok, just a normal place. I think sometimes it does people good to go to a 'normal' place and experience some crime (within reason!!) you'll learn a lot more from the experience, than you would at a idylic crime free false place such as St Andrews for example.

Im not saying people should be prepared to be mugged!! but I think you learn a lot more from life if you do meet 'real' local people, with real accents, jobs and lives. Instead of simply mixing with other students in an unreal world.

I do live near Hull though!!, so maybe im used to dealing with scum and low-life

Stockton is a chav-infested hole. My cousin went there, and had rats and maggots in her accommodation.

Judging from your other posts, you talk rubbish and probably don't even have a cousin who goes there. Maggots...and rats...in a building that is super modern and was only built a few years ago...yeah.

Oh please, this argument has been had so many times, and now we are getting primary school level posturing from an obviously very immature member of the community. The levels of warnings received should show the mindset of a person like this, who can be safely ignored I think, and allowed to play quietly while the grown ups talk.
