May i join too? Atheist, rather than agnostic/'weak atheist'. I tried to join the 'atheism and general cynicism' society, but it never got set up. Glad i've found this one. And can we have a logo, to go next to our names, as some socs do?

Any suggestions, anyone? I have to admit, nothing springs to mind as a logo for an atheism society.

Welcome to all the new members. I'm afraid that the admin team has informed me that no new societies will be created until the forum software is updated. I'll try once more to lobby them to set it up, and as soon as it is up, I'll PM the current membership.

Also if members could put a link to this thread in their sigs and just passively advertise it around the forum that would be great.

Btw, the logo I have in mind for the society is a lit lightbulb, suggestive of creative thought and new ideas. If anyone has strong opinions on what kind of logo they would like, then please PM me or post here.

Do you think if everyone was an atheist you wouldn't get attacks like 7/7 or that the madmen would just find another excuse, another thing to get fanatical about?

I don't think it is about religion to start with. I think it could just as easily be skin colour or nose shape. These people like killing and death and want to cause pain.

this is the society in which i belong, the thing is though, i'm not sure if i'm a strong or weak atheist....i'm not devout and adamant about my beliefs, so does this make me weak?? if you're defined by your religion, does that make you a strong atheist??....anyway, i'm in, if allowed

    Short naturalist creed:

1: I shall in all instances base my beliefs on inference to be best, that being in all cases the more ontologically conservative explanation which fits with the apparent facts.

2: I have not yet, nor do I expect to have any experience which would lead me to infer there is any more than one metaphysical 'object' that being the universe and that all else within it is

3: I shall strive to ensure my beliefs in all cases are coherent and based on good reasons. I shall strive to keep an open mind when it comes to serious, testible and credible propositions.

4: I do not believe in 'miracles', nor in magical, non-causal processes.

5: I do not believe in 'Gods', nor 'necessary', transcendental beings no matter how interesting the hat of the man who tells me of them is, nor however much comfort it might give me to believe such things.

6: I do not believe in 'life after death', nor heaven, nor hell.

7: I do not believe in 'souls', nor in absolute good, nor absolute evil.

8: I do not believe in 'free will', in the magic, causa sui, cartesian sense required by the 'free will defense'.

9: I do not believe in revelation through faith, nor clairvoyance.

10: I shall, in my life, endevour to be virtuous, as I understand it and shall seek the truth, or as near as I can come to it. I shall bow down before no prophet nor guru nor God but shall carry myself through my life with pride and dignity until my death, so help me dog.

(might need some modification due to ineloquence)

By the by, add me to the list please.

The Admins here have stopped signing up new "Societies with Logos™" so we'll have to wait before we can set anything like that up.

All new members have been added to the member list.

As you can tell by my sig, I'm not a particular fan of religion, although I would describe myself more as an apatheist than an atheist. That is, I believe that even if God existed, the effect that it would have on my life would be negligable, and as a consequense I simply don't care about relgion. I enjoy pissing off Howard though with my theories of how God farted to create the universe and Jesus is a weed smoking hippy though.
