Its a really horrible practice, they do it on newborn babies without anaesthetic :frown:

That's disgraceful. Why do they insist on having age limits for a tatoo. The irony!

I hope you've never criticised anyone for making a statement too sweeping.

i got this from a website, http://www.circinfo.com/benefits/bmc.html

Are there benefits from circumcision?

There are several:

1 Many older men, who have bladder or prostate gland problems, also develop difficulties with their foreskins due to their surgeon's handling, cleaning, and using instruments. Some of these patients will need circumcising. Afterwards it is often astonishing to find some who have never ever seen their glans (knob) exposed before!

2 Some older men develop cancer of the penis - about 1 in 1000 - fairly rare, but tragic if you or your son are in that small statistic. Infant circumcision gives almost 100% protection, and young adult circumcision also gives a large degree of protection.

3 Cancer of the cervix in women is due to the Human Papilloma Virus. It thrives under and on the foreskin from where it can be transmitted during intercourse. An article in the British Medical Journal in April 2002 suggested that at least 20% of cancer of the cervix would be avoided if all men were circumcised. Surely that alone makes it worth doing?

4 Protection against HIV and AIDS. Another British Medical Journal article in May 2000 suggested that circumcised men are 8 times less likely to contract the HIV virus. (It is very important here to say that the risk is still far too high and that condoms and safe sex must be used - this applies also to preventing cancer of the cervix in women who have several partners.)

A BBC television programme in November 2000 showed two Ugandan tribes across the valley from one another. One practised circumcision and had very little AIDS, whereas, it was common in the other tribe, who then also started circumcising. This programme showed how the infection thrived in the lining of the foreskin, making it much easier to pass on.

5 As with HIV, so some protection exists against other sexually transmitted infections. Accordingly, if a condom splits or comes off, there is some protection for the couple. However, the only safe sex is to stick to one partner or abstain.

6 Lots of men, and their partners, prefer the appearance of their penis after circumcision, It is odour-free, it feels cleaner, and they enjoy better sex. Awareness of a good body image is a very important factor in building self confidence.

7 Balanitis is an unpleasant, often recurring, inflammation of the glans. It is quite common and can be prevented by circumcision.

8 Urinary tract infections sometimes occur in babies and can be quite serious. Circumcision in infancy makes it 10 times less likely.

no wonder most porn stars are circumcised...

do they?
its news to me, circumsition is just a religious thing not cultural ^_^
oh and what aboutt muslim too?

Just religious? no, it is also cultural. My family is Roman Catholic and I am circumcised. Also, from playing a sport I have seen my fair of penis' in the showers after practice and tournaments, and In my 23 years I have only ever seen two uncircumcised penis'. In the US almost everyone is circumcised regardless of religion.

There are no real medical benefits to it that I know of, but I would certainly have my son circumcised just because most girls I know in the US who I have spoke to think it looks odd otherwise (not meant as offense to anyone, just over here its not normal to be uncircumcised).

ha!

HIV arguments are stupid, using condoms and not sleeping with skanks offer much better protection than chopping your foreskin off.

remember that America was seen as a new 'Promised Land' when it was first discovered - they even came close to making the official language Hebrew, when first became a country in its own right.

LOL biggest lie ever.

Its usually done within a few hours of birth, sometimes a few days later (I believe Jews do it when the baby is eight days old but I'm not certain). Its arms and legs are strapped down then the Dr slices down one side of the foreskin and then peels the foreskin back. At that age the skin is attached to the penis like your fingernail is attached to your finger, so its obviously VERY painful. It used to be argued babies at this age couldn't feel pain but its been proven they now feel it far more sensitively at that age.

Parents don't see this procedure being done so don't realise the pain they go through and how cruel it is, you just tick a box on your hospital form saying you want your baby circumcised. Plus, the way the health system works in America the Dr gets paid to do it so advise getting it done if asked by parents, and you'd obviously trust your doctor's advice.

I've seen pictures and videos of it being done it was so horrible it made me feel sick. I think it should be banned unless its done for medical reasons.

You've obviously never been to a circumcision. I have, the baby sometimes cries a bit, but it's over within a minute or two. At the age of 8 days most of the nerve endings aren't fully developed yet so they don't feel as much pain. Muslims circumcise their girls - that's got to hurt!

Oh, and I also think its really disgusting when people use "girls think it looks odd uncircumcised" or "I'm circumcised so I want my kid to look like me" or "all the other kids will be circumcised" as reasons to do it. Its disgusting and cruel and nothing justifies doing it, especially not the reasons I wrote.

Any girl who would care if her boyfriend was circumcised or not is pathetic, I don't know anyone who would care about that. And who compares penises with friends and family members?

Both sides of the American circumcision debate are nutters.

It doesn't have any greatly positive effects. Shockingly enough, human beings don't need routine surgery to get by in life.

Equally however, getting it done is hardly detrimental either. For babies, it's just a little snip. It's not 'mutilation' or any other emotive crap.

Possibly the Jewish influence; remember that America was seen as a new 'Promised Land' when it was first discovered - they even came close to making the official language Hebrew, when first became a country in its own right.

But I think it's just because it's cleaner and easier. All the males in our family have been circumcised, because of this and because we all develop an ilness that means that retaining our foreskins would be very painful, to say the least.

Where are you getting this BS from? Hebrew was never seriously considered to be the official language, since almost no one in the US could speak it. The fact that Jews were strongly looked down upon back then (and were until the 1960s or so) doesn't help your argument either. And the circumcision has nothing to do with Jews:

Used to be about cleaning, and prevent HIV. then they found out it's does **** all for the former. It's was then about status.

This is absolute and utter nonsense. It's not remotely 'disgusting', it's certainly not remotely cruel and there are plenty of medical grounds for doing it aside from the cultural ones.

Nothing more than hysterical bull-**** presented as an argument.

I haven't been to any but I've seen videos (done in hospital by a doctor, not at a religious ceremony), the babies were clearly in a great deal of pain.

Muslims don't circumcise girls do they? I know some African countries do, and I've seen videos of that too

It's a common belief that it is more hygenic and visually pleasing. I have no opinion on the matter.

Some Muslims do, in African countries and other parts of the world. Not UK though (I hope). It's disgusting.

I've been to several including my brother's and he barely even cried. Depends on how the guy does it maybe?

No, I just did a search and it's generally prohibited. It's accepted by a small minority of muslims in Ethiopa or something, according to wiki.

How is it not cruel? You are removing a body part that has a lot of nerve endings. Its an irreversible operation, you are denying the person the right to remain intact, which they may regret when they are older.

And medical grounds? Helps protect against HIV and some sexually transmitted diseases? So does using a condom and not sleeping around. Or are you referring to prevention of rare diseases that you are highly unlikely to develop anyway?

It is not cruel at all. All that happens is a piece of skin you don't need (and can cause problems in future) is removed. The pain is 2 minutes at most and not even every baby cries.

I advise you to go to one carried out by a religiously accredited person as they are more experienced than the doctors who do it (they do not circumcise for a living - may just be general surgeon). Your views on the matter will change completely.

All of those reasons were mentioned as a means to demonstrate how it is a great deal cultural and not just a religious thing. Also I did not suggest that a girl would care if her boyfriend was uncircumcised, but only that they thought it looked odd (due to a lack of exposure to the sight of uncircumcised penises within the US) I dont know why you appear to have been so offended or what by my explanation...

Also it is not disgusting or cruel. I am not traumatized from the experience. I dont remember it at all. You are like a peta activist, except in this case the animal (myself and all of the other circumcised Americans) are able to speak and say 'it is no big deal' the pain is like that of scraping your knee or getting a bad cat scratch... oh dear god, I had better not let my kids near any cats, if they get scratched it would be quite cruel.

Nothing wrong with having a bleeding heart, but it is bleeding over nothing in the case of infant circumcision.

Edit: Also, as far as comparing penises... you have clearly never been in a mens locker room lol... not saying theres any homosexual activity, just that theres a lot of naked men walking around.
