History A level.

hello. I am currently in year 11 and doing GCSES. at the moment i m trying to make the right choice of A levels. I am thinking of taking A level history and just wondering if it is worth taking for me. In history GCSE I am predicted to get an A*, but surprisingly english is not my first language and in english i m predicted to get B, although I m aiming for an A.So is history worth taking for me and is edexcel syllabus of history a level an interesting one?

hi,

Im currently doing EDEXCEL histroy, and it is reallllly good! im doing seeds of evil which is basically the rise of national socialism in Germany, life in Hitlers Germany and American civil rights. It is a really interesting course especially if you love nazi germany. Your grades sound fine, i was predicted an A* at GCSE history but only got an A due to one paper, yes a whole paper, that we had next to no idea about because we had spent one lesson on it in the whole two years and were guarnteed it wouldnt be on the exam, anyway im rambling. I got an A* in english but even if you got a B or even a C you would be fine, you just need good skills in picking informaton out of sources and interpreting it.

But yeh deffinelty do history!

History is an excellent subject to take on, I'm with OCR. I'd go with what Matt has said above. But just remember the workload from GCSE to AS is a big jump and make sure you are aware of it, as this caught me by surprise. But i'd say yeah go for it!

Also don't worry about your English grade, i was in the lowest English group in my school in year 11, and i came out with an A in Eng Lang and a B in Eng Lit (Predicted DD). It just shows how dodgily teachers group you and their inability to properly analyse your ability.

just checked my school's website and the syllabus is concluded as followed:
Lower Sixth

AS Unit 1: Russia in Revolution, 1905-17
Unit 2: Russia, 1918-29
Unit 3: The English Reformation, 1529-47

Upper Sixth
A2 Unit 4: Stalin and Destalinisation, 1945 - 64
Unit 5: Coursework - The making of Modern Russia
Unit 6: The Crisis of the Tudor State, 1547-58

Well i used to live in a country of soviet union a couple of years ago. I guess I will go for it, since I also want to improve my english.

Oooh, those modules look tough compared to mine.

Like i said don't worry about your English. It seems fine from what i'm reading. You have most of the eyar 11's beat in my school. They can't even use full stops.

That looks like a really interesting combination, I did Russia in Revolution for unit 1 - it was my favourite unit in the first year

additionally I used to live in russian speaking country of former societ union a couple of years ago. I guess the knowledge of russian language may play in favour for me, because I would be able to read in russian the stuff which is only on russian websites and then try to interpret it in my words. The thing is i also want to do medicine and still havent decided between economics and medicine. I need to make a tough choice whether to choose biology or history. Biology may seem essential for medicine, but essay writing subject such as history is quite essential for economics as well.
I do history A Level, and it is the most boring subject I've ever taken. Seriously, I loved it at GCSE, but now I can't stand it.

Is anyone finding A2 History easier than AS History?

Or generally finding A2 easier than AS?

Elements of A2 are easier, though on the whole, AS History was easier.

I find A2 History harder, but that's probably due to the fact that my good teacher (we have two, one who's nice and funny and everything, but just hands out photocopied notes and practises exam papers and things, the other who's amazing and gets us to really think about the work and discuss things and makes it way more interesting (and also hates the same bits of history as I do, ie. economic stuff), and it's this one who's gone) has been ill for ages so we haven't even seen her in months and are having to rely on random supply teachers and our head of history (who does a completely different period of history and knows nothing about our stuff) frantically reading up to teach us the majoity of the syllabus. Plus we have no textbooks and the exams are horrible and I hate the mark schemes.
But apart from that, history's great. It's a brilliant subject and if you're decently taught, you'll really enjoy it.

I have to agree with you there Matt. Also the fact one module is coursework takes the pressure of a little at A2. Even though i don't actually get the grade until August. :frown:

I hope this year actually is easy and it's me not just being lazy.

Last year, on the document studies paper on Nazi Germany, i didn't have a clue about the topic. It was on the police state, i thought i was fooked as did my mates, we all just looked at each other and thought $h!t. But we all got 110 or above out of 120 in this module. lol.
I do AS history with Edexcel, but your topics are completely different to mine. As a subject, I'd say history is brilliant to have because it's one of the most respected arts subjects and will really help you with analytical skills. I only got an A at GCSE, but I'm predicted an A at AS and I haven't really noticed that much of a gap. Obviously the workload is bigger, as it is for all AS subjects, but in terms of difficulty and the way you're tested, it's very similar to GCSE. From what I've read of your posts, I wouldn't have been able to tell that English wasn't your first language because it sounds fine. I can't see you having any difficulties with history

History rules! Fave subject, although British element is quite boring at times.
I've become much more analytical, and my essays are generally better through doing History. i find it very interesting too. Although reading around the subject is a big aspect and it can be a hard subject with the workload...but i'd advise it!

I got a C at GCSE, i was predicted an A. I don't know what went wrong. My other grades were 4A's, 4B's, C and a D. The D was in French, lol. Long story behind that, but i was happy with a D.

Not bad for a year group which achieved 23% 5 A*-C GCSE's though.

I'm not far off an A. I've got 235 UMS marks i think. Really frustrating. :frown:
