Default Political Science + Social Policy 2009

Hello got accepted to birmingham for political science and social policy joint honours... trouble is i picked social policy with it because i thought it would give me a good chance of getting in ( im a striaght B grade student).. but the social policy side doesnt sound bad, its just the fact i know very little of social policy... Is anyone doing social policy and political science? Is it a good course ?... not too hard for a B grade student currently at A level? Im a hard worker!! Just worried!!??

I am starting Social Policy and Political Science in september.

From what i know, chatting to other students and doing a bit of background reasearch myself, there is nothing that makes Social Policy harder than any other humanities degree. It's all about putting the effort in, as with anything else.

Also, not sure why you teamed Politics up with Social Policy if you though it would increase your chances of getting in, as far as i am aware, with a joint honours programme they take the highest requirement from either subject, and use that as the standard for the joint.

So if Social Policy (single honours) required BBB, and Politics (single) requires AAB, then they should be asking for AAB with the combined.

At least, that is what i have always been told. I could be wrong. What's your offer?

At the end of the day you are doing all the core modules of politics, it isn't going to make things easier removing your electives and replacing it with Social Policy, arguable it makes things harderd because you have to adopt 2 different subject mindsets. Or so i believe.

Well yeah, except for the 328 000.52 words of essays you'll need to write in third year.

(Rumours are that IR with coursework-only modules have the uni's most words to write in essays. It'd be 13 500 + 8000 + 8000 + 8000 + 8000).

Well you could alternatively choose modules with the mark coming mainly from exams. But that means your degree grade will be decided by a couple of 3 hour exams (I don't like the idea personally).

dude we all had the option of a 52.000 easter hand in... I'm going to be doing just under that, think I have 2 or 3 modules with 4k and an exam rather than 4 +4 or 8

Now I need to get cracking on with that dissertation, hell is it going to suck. Why did I choose such an obscure topic

Yeah that sounds about right- I'm straight Politics and will have not far shy of that- the compulsory module is 4000 words at least, but others will be 8, 8 and 8 I think- plus dissertation of 13,500 as you say. Could be a long year ahead...
