Question Query..

I'm in Year 11 and we got asked to write a personal statement for college. I was under the impression personal statements are for university to go with your UCAS form?

Can anybody tell me if I am right and the purpose of writing one in school for college?

you have to use them for a lot of things, it will probably be more of an exercise to get used to them, at 16 there is minimal things you can really put on them for a job, but colleges etc. will want to see what you like, do you have a life outside school? and your English skills. It's hard to write about yourself, they like you to practice.

Some colleges do ask you to write a personal statement especially if they are colleges with competitive entry. The purpose is to tell the college a bit more about yourself and help distinguish you from other candidates- a bit like ea UCAS personal statement really, except extra curricular actitives tend to matter more for College than Uni.

You want to mention why you've chosen the subjects you have, why you want to apply for that particular college and any EC's you do in your spare time.
