Higher Physics thread

Hi guys, I'll start the thread of by asking a question. In the 2005 past paper question 22 a) part two,

I got this question wrong because i used the resultant tension force (4500 newtons) and took the force of gravity away from it for the unbalanced force and divided it by the mass to get the acceleration, but the answer book had a different value so i tried again and this time i used the vertical component of the tension and took gravity away from that and i got the right answer.

What i would like to know is why do you use the components of force to find out the unbalanced force? And will it be always like this.

Thanks...
